A distance of .08 miles is only 400 feet - about 5 car lengths. Even if they were both very short platforms there would hardly be any space between them. |

It is .8 miles. I've been driving up and down route 22 for over 30 years now and have never seen anybody on the campus of the old state hospital, even after it was finally sold to whatever evangelical group owns it now. It was first going to be some college operated by them, but now is just "Evangelical Center".After the state closed it, the speed limit going by it was 30mph for at least 20 years even though it was an empty space, where the rest of the road was 40 or 55. And it is funny how once a road is signed for something it almost never changes. |

A distance of .08 miles is only 400 feet - about 5 car lengths. Even if they were both very short platforms there would hardly be any space between them. There is a slight typo in there. It should read 69.8 not .08. However a did consult the Harlem Line Employee Timetable issued in February 1, 1971. The official mileage for "STATE HOSPITAL" (today's HARLEM VALLEY-WINGDALE) is 69.1. The mileage for "WINGDALE" is 69.7. IIRC the Wingdale station was simple a three sided shack by 1977. It was at the crossroads with Pleasant Ridge Road (NY Rt 21). Larry, RedbirdR33 |

IRT yards had either GE-only cars or Westinghouse-only cars, except for Corona Yard. It mafe for tutti-frutti trains before the platinum mist-and-blue paint scheme took hold. |

There are some more interesting examples of solid trains. When the R-12's were in service on the Third Avenue El they ran in solid four car trains. When the Willy B was closed in 1999 the was an "S" Shuttle service between Essex Street and Broad Street. They ran solid four car trains of R-40 M. During the General Overhaul period for the Flushing Line R-33 (MP) were sent over from the mainland to help cover the service. They ran in eleven cars train with their single unit brethren. This is the only time that I know of that this occurred. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Also, I remember when they took off that single 11th car in the summertime since the TA could boast an all air conditioned fleet with the 10 paired cars. Those 10 cars were packed in the rush hr and not all those paired R36WFs had good air conditioning. Apparently it wasnt possible or practical to install A/C in those single cars. This practice went on for several years. One time I went out to Flushing Meadow park & walking the boardwalk over the Corona yard, all those single R33s would be sitting in the sun taking the summer off. |
