Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Nov 1 12:40:23 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for November 1 1881 – from The Book of First Runs Sixth Avenue El service is extended from Rector Street to South Ferry over the tracks of the Ninth Avenue El from Battery Park South. 1906 – from The Book of First Runs The city takes over the operation of the Whitehall Street – 39th Street (Bklyn) Ferry. This service had been run since 1887 by the New York and South Brooklyn Ferry Company. The first run under municipal ownership used the MINEOLA which was on charter from the Union Ferry Company. Service on this route will continue until 1938. 1937 – from The Book of Last Runs Service on the New York, Westchester & Boston Railway is cut back from Port Chester to North Avenue station in New Rochelle. 1962 – from The Book of First Runs Operation of ten car trains on the No.7 Flushing during the rush hours begins today. This was made possible by the transfer of fifty R-17’s (6500-6549) from the mainline. Usually the R-17’s run in solid trains but occasionally they are mixed with the R-14’s and R-15’s. This is the first time that the IRT has run ten car trains with only one conductor. 2017 – from The Book of First Runs On or about this date the New York-New Jersey Rail LLC takes delivery of the first of two railroad car floats. The new float, NYNR-100 is 370 feet long and can hold 18 sixty foot rail cars. They will be placed in service on the car float ferry between Greenville, New Jersey and 65th Street in Brooklyn. You'd never guess those R-17s were originally decked out in maroon. The World's Fair opened in April 1964.There were not enough of the Bluebirds to cover the service. Several Redbird train sets were sent over from the mainline to help out. Along with them went a number of R-17's to make up the eleventh car. Once they were run through the car wash at Corona Yard we had a chance to see their proper color. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

There are a few pictures of them in their original dark red paint scheme. Many began their service on the 6 Pelham line. I remember them descending the ramp along Whitlock Ave. going into the tunnel east of the Hunts Point Ave. station. Sometimes the windows in my grandparents' apartment at 1002 Longfellow Avenue would rattle when a train passed. |
