That is the color I remember the R-17s when they were new. They were all assigned to the Pelham Line at that time. When the R-21s were first sent to the Bway line, for some reason I wasn’t riding the subway that much and when i did it was mostly underground so I didn’t notice the color that much. By the time I started riding the Bway Line to high school, the R-17s and 21s were both steel dust covered and looked the same to my eye. At one point while boarding the train at V/C I noticed the area around the doors which was not steel dusted during to passengers often putting their hands there, looked green. The M/M told me that the cars wee green, and I thought they were red the way I remembered the R-17s. Later on when the last of the R-22s were being delivered , i saw the true “subway green” color prior to the cars becoming steel dusted. Although I nver saw the R-15s when brand new, after their washing I noticed that their maroon was a bit darker than the maroon of the R-17s. Over the years I have wondered why in the 1950s group of SMEES, when most were painted “subway green” the R-17s were the only group done in maroon. |
