Note that the R-17 cars did not come equipped with sealed beam headlights nor did any other SMEE cars until the R-22 cars were delivered a few years later. Then the TA retrofitted all the earlier SMEE cars plus many of the prewar cars so that track workers could more easily detect an approaching train and take the proper safety precautions. However some of the R1-9 cars used for excursions still do not have them and must have temporary lights attached in order to operate as the lead car of any train.
