There are a few pictures of them in their original dark red paint scheme. Many began their service on the 6 Pelham line. I remember them descending the ramp along Whitlock Ave. going into the tunnel east of the Hunts Point Ave. station. Sometimes the windows in my grandparents' apartment at 1002 Longfellow Avenue would rattle when a train passed.
