And on this date in 1969, the Miracle Mets shocked the baseball world by winning the World Series, defeating the heavily-favored Baltimore Orioles. I remember the final out as though it were yesterday. I got home from school in time to see it live, then watched the postgame clubhouse celebration. Naturally, the city went bonkers. Chances are those 7 trains were jammed with revelers after the game. |

I rode one of them from 74th St. after transferring from an E or F train of R1-9 cars that I boarded at Fifth Avenue after leaving a driver education class on West 54th St. When the conductor announced the Willets Point-Shea Stadium stop as the home of the world champion Mets everyone cheered. Davey Johnson was the Baltimore Orioles player who made the final out and ironically enough he would manage the Mets to their next championship in 1986. |

I've seen photos of that field after everyone had left. It was completely torn up. The grounds crew had to get it back in shape for a Jets game the following Monday, but despite their efforts, much of the sod gave way under the players' cleats. |

Actually, I believe he was known then as Dave Johnson. I believe he later changed it to Davey to avoid confusion with the longtime Horse Racing track announcer. |

I'm guessing that Monday night game was planned (before 1970, CBS and NBC would do an occasional Monday night telecast). That game was also the home opener for the Jets, who would play seven straight home games before finishing with two on the road. |

The Mets had insisted that the Jets couldn't play any home games until the baseball season had ended. IIRC at some point in the mid to late 70s, the Jets took the matter to court and won their case, which meant they could play home games in September. Someone once explained that the pitcher's mound would be bulldozed and the dugout entrances covered over for football games, then the mound would have to be reconstructed.I noticed when the Cleveland Browns still played at Municipal Stadium, there was so much room that the end line at the closed end extended over the pitcher's mound, which was laft in place. |

Shea had movable seats and I think the dugouts were part of the mechanics of it. The field level boxes on both sides moved to be parallel to each other for football. I did see the Jets play there once but don't remember much about it. |

I was only at Shea twice for football, opening Sunday of the 1980 season and for the only post-merger playoff game ever at Shea against the Bills in 1981. The thing I noticed was how some of the field level stands (not including those directly behind home plate in the baseball setting) were moved considerably. |

The lower field boxes were built on rails for ease of movement. They were parallel to the foul lines for baseball, then were shifted away from each other for football, running parallel to the sidelines. |

Adding: The week before (Dec. 20, 1981) against the Packers in a game that put BOTH the Jets and Giants in the playoffs (Jets for the first time since 1969, Giants since 1963) in what then was the biggest NFL game in New York since Super Bowl III (which really became such after the Giants beat the Cowboys the day before in The Meadowlands), fans at Shea tore down the goalposts and the Jets had to scramble to get new ones for the game: |

I use to go to Shea when the Yankees were there for the 74 and 75 seasons and would go with my Uncle who was a Met fan. We also went to several Jet games there over the years. I remembersome of the stands being on rollers. My father was a Motorman on the Flushing line then. We would drive to Shea, he would drop me off at the corner of the driveway to Corona Yard and park there. I’ve been to a couple of Pinstripe Bowl games at Yankee Stadium and that layout is also interesting. |

It felt like the inside of a walk in freezer. And the Jets lost to add insult to injury. Same old Jets! Not much has changed over the years. |
