When the R40Ms were frequently run with R-38s and R-42s back in the late 60s and 70s they did so with no issue. When R-40 slants were run with any of the above, the #1 end doors were locked for safety reasons. Neither were particularly maintenance friendly .

Thanks.

I remember, when I was a kid in the 70's it was a treat to be a passenger on this trains, as they spent little time on the J, L, M lines. Or there were just one or two consists on each line.

I don't think many employees or passengers miss these train.

IIRC the LL had 2 six car consists. The M & Jamaica lines had none.

When the R42's came out, those 2 trains on the LL were sent to Jamaica Yd. to join the other R40M's.

The Eastern Division then received R42's #'ed something like 4852 to 4922.

Later when the R44's came out, The Eastern Division received additional R42's: 4923-4949.

Thanks.

I remember Thanksgiving 1977. We had neighbors who happened to work in an office building on Broadway so they invited us to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to watch from their office.

I was excited........about taking the LL to the Broadway BMT. That's all I cared about.

On the way home we had an R-42 on the LL. It was my first time on that train. If an adult asked me what floats I saw at the parade I couldn't tell them. The train was the real reason I wanted to go. I just didn't tell anyone of my hidden agenda.

That sort of reminds me when I was a kid when my dad brought the family to Radio City Music Hall to see a movie and Rockettes. I was only excited about riding the AB's to 34th St where we changed for and (F) to 47th-50th Sts.

I remember one time my dad was taking me out to Shea to see the Dodgers play the Mets and we had really good seats. I was excited to go but was disappointed when I started walking towards the subway and he said no, the car is this way. The game though was still fun, Koufax was pitching.

It wasn't the first or only time to Shea as a kid so it wasn't too disappointing to not ride the subway that time. In fact it may have been the only time I didn't take the subway to Shea, including to see The Beatles, game 5 of the '69 series, and Joe Namath and countless Mets games using the Bordens coupons on the sides of milk containers to sit in the upper deck. We learned pretty quickly that they didn't really check to see if you had 10 coupons, you just threw them in a bin. We'd have 2 real ones and then 8 cut outs from the rest of the carton. They were more looking to get people in the stands for weekday day games.

Bill: One feature of the R-40's and R-42's that I liked was the original front roll sign. There was absolutely no doubt about what line the train was running on.

Supposedly the R40M's were in overall better condition than the remaining fifty R42's in 2010 when the major SMEE retirement occured, however all of the R40Ms we're already scrapped before those R42's were saved and lived on for an entire additional decade.

Just imagine in February of last year we had an R40M retirement trip, had different decisions been made in the past.

It's funny that you say that. Until I was 9 y/o (about 1974) we lived near to West Farms Sq area. We used to often visit my aunt who lived on Light St near to Dyre Ave station. We'd take the #5 train which I absolutely loved, especially looking at the trains in the yard as we waited at E. 180th St. Then once the train left the station seeing all of the work trains and such just north of the station.

Sometimes we'd get a ride home or if it was very late we'd take a cab home which was always a disappointment to me as I felt cheated out of a subway ride, lol

Great memories. Growing up I live mostly in the west Bronx near to the Grand Concourse so of course the D was my "home line". I still remember my first ride on an IND train at about 10 y/o. We had just move near to Tremont - Concourse and one day I was going somewhere in midtown with my dad when a consist of R-42s arrived. I'm sure there was likely R-40Ms in the consist as well as that seemed to be the rule on the D from that time until they went for GOH.

I think Concourse Yard had R-42s 4694-4807, and all or at least most of the R-40Ms. I remember that it was always a treat to see or ride 4764/65 as that pair retained their original blue interior until the clean car program of the mid/late 80s.

Riding subways was a blast for me in Philadelphia. We only have 2 basic lines. I rode the Broad St. Line in 1950 with my mom, she taught at an elementary school in North Philadelphia. I was in the class next door, with Ms. Holtz Later on , I rode the BSS to college, rode to City Hall, transfered to the MFSE to 30th St. to Drexel U.

NYC subways are fascinating, I went on many chartered trips, MOD trips, etc.

Ah! I enjoyed SEPTA subway rides too. My first ride on the MFL was back in the late 80s. I remember it was summer, the cars (I think the "Almond Joys???") car some powerful fans and were fast (and noisy) as heck. I remember at the time thinking they reminded me of NYCTA's R-10 with the speed and noise. Then some years later I rode the Broad St line for the first time. It was a weekday and we were on an express and I was amazed at the thrilling ride. What a rush!!!

Yup! Lots of times as I absolutely loved that my home line was the Brighton Express. Eventually, I'd start going down to Cony Island on the other lines which was usually on the weekend. I like the Culver, but I loved the 4th Ave express, and since there was no Brighton Express service on weekends... I usually rode one of the other lines. My fav on the weekends was N/B on the N for the 4th Ave express and Bway express.

My family and I once lived on Eastern Pkwy near the New Lots line. My earliest subway memory was riding with my family on the Lo-V's that plied that line. I was mystified by all the people entering and exiting through that dark vestibule at the end of the car.

I remember my aunt telling me we were going to take the "fast express" from Franklin to Utica. It was a train of Low-vs and probably around 1958 or '59. My grandmother lived on Sheffield Ave and Livonia and we'd go to Pennsylvania Ave stop of course. Fortunoffs was a regular stop when we went there too.

I should add that to this day I've never gone past Pennsylvania Ave out to New Lots. It is one of the last sections of the subway I've never been to. Lefferts was another but on the "goodbye to the R42" day I got off at Euclid at the end of the run and said what the hell, let me go out there.

Jamaica Center and 148th/Lenox are the other 2 places I've never been, and I'm not sure I've been to 207th although I know I've been to Dyckman more than once.

I like New Lots terminal.

Jamaica Center is nothing special.

Lenox is another terminal worth visiting.

New Jersey, both NJT and the privates, got half of them and they ran into the 1990's.

Trans Bridge once in a while pressed one into service on the Doylestown - PABT US202 route. Usually their 3 ran in Phillipsburg - Easton local service.

My memories were the Sea Beach, West End, 4th Avenue Locals. The R1-9s on the Culver Line too.

They ran into early 2000s on ONE Bus (routes 12, 24 and 44) before Roach USA gobbled them up and brought in the RTS 1538s. (ONE ran some rebuilt Fishbowls alongside them in the mid-1990s, which was very cool.)
