Most likely, the spares for the shuttle are either in 140 Yd or Westchester Yd since those 2 lines use R-62As like the shuttle whereas Livonia uses R-62s.

Considering the situation on the #7 distance wise regarding the C/R position, and the fact that there are actually TWO persons on the shuttle trains at all times, the TWU will likely lose big time.

I think it all depends on whether the T/O at the rear of a train at Times SQ can get a clear view of the entire train. There seems to be a CCTV monitor on track 4 but not on track 1. Supporting columns on track 1 may obscure the view of the front of the train from the rear.

Taking another look at the video William Padron posted, it does appear there is a CCTV monitor at the rear of track 1.

They would have been a four car set only as it would be available. There would be no problem if they had used the SMEE's, as it could occupy the now entire six-car length platforms.

The T/O's operating at the ends only on the trains (each 306' in length), so they open and close doors not in the middle. There are now video monitors at the ends of the platforms on each side for the T/O's to see.

By the way, if anyone is thinking of taking pictures of the front ends of the trains, it would have to be done at the western end of the TSQ platforms and the eastern end of the GCT platforms. It is a tight fit at the opposite other end each at those locations.

The passageway is not as narrow as it appears in the video, nor is it as long as I expected (nowhere near as long as the passageway from the IND to the Flushing line 5 Av station), and it is beautifully decorated, with stunning mosaics and video displays. Even the opposite wall has very attractive matching accent tiles, and as a bonus, the original 1904 ceiling is exposed and visible, including the triangular supports.

The stairs down to the IND platforms cut through the Track #2 trackway, so it would have been complicated to also use that for the passageway.

Upon entering the passageway from the IND, the first countdown clock is for the shuttle; the reverse side was not working when I was there, showing only the date and time in a large font. At the west end of the passageway the next countdown clock is for the N,Q,R,W; the reverse shows the B,D,F,M. There is no clock for the 1,2,3, which seems to be an obvious oversight.

The door operating positions don’t have to be “changed” per se. All the happens is that when the train arrives at each end. the door operator “zones down” (disengages) the door controls and the “new” door operator zones up.

AFAIK, the Gs run 4 car trains of 75 footers or possibly on rare occasions 5 car trains of NTTs. If it should happen that a 6 car train of R-46s should happen to be assembled then of course it would have a C/R since it would be longer than the 300 ft maximum.

I understand that they had to cut through the floor of Track 2 for the stairway, but that's only at the very end of the corridor - the rest could have been wider. If you say that it's wide enough as-is, OK - but it seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.

SEPTA's Market Frankford Subway Elevated, has video monitors in the cab. SEPTA has straight platforms,btw.. On side platforms , "some" T/Os open the side window to observe the platform as a safety check , IIRC.. Center platforms, you use the video monitor only.

I think they had planned to build an underpass going from the new corridor to the unused corridor running under the north side of 42 St and have a mid block shuttle entrance there. They could use the track 2 space for stairs and an elevator going down to the underpass to clear under track 4, then other stairs and elevator to the north side corridor and street entrance.

IMO, for that case they should have left the tunnel portions of track 2 and/or track 3 as pocket tracks with an extra train, connected to 1 and 4 with new switches. That way, it only takes 15-30 min to replace an OOS train.

Very likely, but 6 cars of capacity every 6 minutes or so is still better than 5 cars of capacity every 6 minutes.

They would also warn people away from the Shuttle and onto the 7 or the sidewalk to help reduce load. But under all circumstances 6 cars are better than 5.

It looked like that the GCT platform and the side walls on the west end may had been extended, particularly on track 4. I did not see much of a difference for track 1.

The dispatcher's office is gone, and the exit stairway for Madison Avenue is extended and placed literally where Track 3 was. The switch between 1 and 3 to move trains in and out is also gone too.

Also, all GRS-built signals along the line were replaced with new CBTC-ready signals from Alstom. It will be ready when the new R-262's will ever be used on that line though in the future.

IIRC this wouldn’t happen. The married couple of R46s were always on the south end, while the 4-car set was on the north end. So in this scenario, the consist configuration would be swapped and 6220 would be the lead, with the conductor being positioned in 5926.

The technology associated with CBTC probably allows the train to be operated without either of the operators but only with a conductor, subject to collective bargaining of course.

The G uses 4 car trains of 75 foot cars equaling 300 feet on the daily schedule. That is late Sunday night/early Monday morning straight thru till late Friday night/early Saturday morning.

With c/r's on the daily schedule, OPTO on S/S/Holidays. Except of course on those rare GO weekends when the G goes to Stillwell. Then of course 600 foot trains with a c/r. This paragraph necessary due to the SubChat police.

All I can tell you from riding that shuttle many many times, the door operating position is not changed when the train gets to the terminals.

And I can be positive that the OPTO t/o's are not doing that on their own, based on today's oversight by TSS's & Superintendents.

Are you telling me door operating positions are changed at the terminals too?

In a word, Yes! Happens regularly on M OPTO trains (that do not relay). Upon arrival, T/O dumps, opens doors, partial closes, goes to TERM, activates shuttle switch, goes to run, dezones and secures the position. At the other end, the shuttle switch operation is cancelled with the buzzer, after zoning up. Basically the s/switch function keeps the doors open when the MDC goes to run. Charge up, await the lights, open and close the doors. {Steps in red apply only to NTT equipment}.

(S/Chat PD disclaimer: I never worked TSQ/GC shuttle, but believe the operation is similar. Going on observation here. T/O arrives dumps, arriving T/O in rear opens, activates switch, goes to run, charges up and waits. The former operator zones up, hits buzzer and closes when appropriate, AND OBSERVES PLATFORM. And why force the operating T/O to do both functions, as opposed to being ready to move when indication comes in? {tick tock}

IAWTP

Almost like the modern automated systems (BART, WMATA, Miami Metrorail, etc.) where the train runs in automatic, but there is an operator (although at metrorail, the operator operates the doors and (I think) presses a start button after closing up. The same may be the case at the LA Metro B/D lines. I've never ridden WMATA and it's been a looonngg time since I've been on BART, so I don't recall their procedure.
