I had often wondered that myself since the signs for that service were on the cars.

Dunno, I'm not sure if that scheme would work on the cars with drop sash windows. It just doesn't quite seem right.

OK, there's the R10 in Canarsie service both new, and in the 1970s-80s!!

I've seen other posts on here from knowledgeable folks stating they ran on the N after 1976. But I've seen no evidence or other information indicating they ever ran on the RR.

And in Manhattan also, there is a Broadway Terrace, a very short street in my former home neighborhood of upper Washington Heights. The one-block stretch is between West 193rd Street and Fairview Avenue, and it does parallel to Broadway.

I can say this now...the apartment building that I had lived on Broadway (from September 1966 to June 1998), next to the Fort George post office, opened in 1930 as the "Broadway Arms".

On the R-12/14/15's for the IRT, there were signs for "167th St.-Jerome Ave" and "Polo Grounds" for the ex-9th Avenue elevated line converted as a shuttle, and the line was in use that way 1940-1958.

They also had signs for "Ditmars Blvd" on the Astoria line, which would become a full-time BMT Division in October 1949.

When the fifty or so R-12's, later four R-14's, went to the 3rd Avenue el in the Bronx, the cars to had have "Gun Hill Road" pasted over their side roll signs. Of course, "148 St-Lenox Terminal" and "Willets Point" were basically add-ons at some point.

Nassau-Culver subway service began at about 12 Noon on 11/26/1931. At about the same time/date all Bay Ridge and Culver el trains running over 5th Ave were terminated at the High St (Sands St) loop. I heard that there had been special summer service from Park Row to Coney Island, prior to 1935, but I have never found anything about it.

Willets Pt would probably have been on the original roll signs since the Flushing Line had rush hour locals terminating there. !48 St may not have been added on, but merely had “148” painted over “145” which was done on the some of the R-17s and up instead of installing a completely new reading. Gun Hill may have been there also since I recall a few mainline IRT subway trains terminated there in rush hours. Also initially, for a few years after the 9 Av el shut down, the remaining service operated between Burnside and Polo Grounds using 3 car trains of Composites until it was reduced to its final status as a shuttle to 167 St.

Didn't the BMT terminate Myrtle Ave El service to Park Row in the mid 1930s?

No that didn't happen until 1944 when the service was cut back to Bridge-Jay Street station where it ran until 1969. Paper transfers were instituted between the elevated line and the IND subway to compensate for the loss of direct service to Manhattan.

BUT, if my memory is correct, Van Sicklin Ave. , Shepard Ave. , and Liberty Ave. were only 10 cars long, and still are.

I believe that from 1944 until 1950, the transfer at Jay Street was from the El to trolley cars that ran across the Brooklyn Bridge to Park Row.

The last el train left Park Row at about noon on Sunday, March 5th, 1944. The City had asked for the closing from the wartime Office of Defense Transportation for over a year, before they gave the okay.

The original Polo Grounds shuttle ran between June 11th, 1940 and June 19th, 1941, I believe. During that first year, the 3-cars trains had "BURNSIDE AVE" and "155 ST" on their side marker plates. I don't know if the later "167 ST" markers on the shuttle cars were pre-Unification, or made later on.

I was told that when 11 car Es ran to Euclid, they pulled one car length past the station. Since at the time 10 and 11 car trains carried 2 C/Rs it was of no consequence to merely keep the head car closed and have any passengers on board walk to the next car.

It's just too bad it wasn't kept for a longer period of time. By 1968, the half-and-half scheme began to appear.
