On the R-12/14/15's for the IRT, there were signs for "167th St.-Jerome Ave" and "Polo Grounds" for the ex-9th Avenue elevated line converted as a shuttle, and the line was in use that way 1940-1958.They also had signs for "Ditmars Blvd" on the Astoria line, which would become a full-time BMT Division in October 1949. When the fifty or so R-12's, later four R-14's, went to the 3rd Avenue el in the Bronx, the cars to had have "Gun Hill Road" pasted over their side roll signs. Of course, "148 St-Lenox Terminal" and "Willets Point" were basically add-ons at some point. -William A. Padron ["Shuttle"] |
