Re: Question About Pre-1950 Rockaway Beach/Far Rockaway LIRR Service

West Hempstead Branch:
Westwood to the N4, Franklin Square people formerly parking at Malverne, Hempstead Gardens and West Hempstead to the N6. Lakeview was never much to begin with.
Hempstead Branch:
to the N6. They'll park at a strip mall or get their better half to drive them to a bus stop.

That alternative works for riders more concerned with money than with time. Take West Hempstead as an example. West Hempstead to the Jamaica terminal is about 30 minutes on the N6 if all goes well with traffic. It's then about 40 minutes on the F to 34th. Figure about an hour and 15 minutes in total, with the connection in Jamaica.
In contrast, West Hempstead to Penn on the LIRR is about 50 minutes, a savings of about 25 minutes. That's a total of 50 minutes saved per workday, which is certainly not an insignificant amount. It's also reasonabe to say that delays are more common on the bus and subway route than on the LIRR.
Of course these times savings will vary according to starting and ending points, but I believe the general rule stands: N6+subway = cheaper, LIRR = faster.

The loadings numbers I remember when I lived on that branch in the 1980's was 1,800 per day. About 600 each for Westwood and Malverne, the rest scattered among the other three. If West Hempstead had 200, they could well have lost half of it since, especially if they work on the 53rd Street corridor, and were already buying a Metrocard. It then becomes a free N6 bus ride as opposed to $270 for the LIRR, and no backtracking from 34th Street to Fifth or Lex Avenue. Hunterspoint connections, since Ronkonkoma electrified, suck.

Parents still have oil . Put a new bit in 2 years ago . Modern units are clean with no Oder in house . Did not convert to gas because it requires a very expensive installation of gas line to the furnace . Gas line plus interior work in rental unit .

I didn't realize West Hempstead ridership, even pre-virus, was that low. Of course that $270 monthly fare doesn't help.

That $270 monthly fare combined with about $120 for a 30 day unlimited Metrocard was one reason I retired from my job in 2017. I am happy to no longer see those charges on my bank statements.

I would agree that modern oil heat is much cleaner than it was years ago. However natural gas is more reliable (no need for deliveries or a storage tank which can leak) but not every area has the infrastructure to deliver it.

Not only that but late at night when I occasionally had to take the train home to Valley Stream the N4 bus on Merrick Road did not run. It's only in recent years that it runs 24/7. I don't know about the N6 as I no longer live along that line. I found that going to Lower Manhattan the N4/J train would take about 1:45 in the AM rush hour. The same trip on the LIRR to Brooklyn and the 4/5 to Bowling Green would take a little over one hour. I used to take the bus/subway route during snow events when the LIRR tended to be unreliable before the M7 cars took over about 20 years ago.

In Malverne, we ran a gas main off the street. Also had to fill the oil tank with sand, and have the filling cap cut off.
