Re: Question About Pre-1950 Rockaway Beach/Far Rockaway LIRR Service

West Hempstead Branch:
Westwood to the N4, Franklin Square people formerly parking at Malverne, Hempstead Gardens and West Hempstead to the N6. Lakeview was never much to begin with.
Hempstead Branch:
to the N6. They'll park at a strip mall or get their better half to drive them to a bus stop.

That alternative works for riders more concerned with money than with time. Take West Hempstead as an example. West Hempstead to the Jamaica terminal is about 30 minutes on the N6 if all goes well with traffic. It's then about 40 minutes on the F to 34th. Figure about an hour and 15 minutes in total, with the connection in Jamaica.
In contrast, West Hempstead to Penn on the LIRR is about 50 minutes, a savings of about 25 minutes. That's a total of 50 minutes saved per workday, which is certainly not an insignificant amount. It's also reasonabe to say that delays are more common on the bus and subway route than on the LIRR.
Of course these times savings will vary according to starting and ending points, but I believe the general rule stands: N6+subway = cheaper, LIRR = faster.
