Tuscarora Almanac – October 27-29, 2004 – The Book of Special Runs

This is the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the “First Subway”. The City Hall station is temporarily re-opened and a four car train of Lo-V motor with dignitaries and invited guests runs from there to the Grand Central shuttle station where a press conference is held. The Lo-V’s then deadhead from there to South Ferry and up the 7th Avenue Line to Times Square. Here passengers are allowed to board and the train ran to 137th Street via the Broadway Line express track all the way.

(Ed.Note: A special temporary staircase was installed at City Hall to allow the dignitaries to enter the station (need details). The Lo-V’s then proceeded north to 59th Street, middle track and ran downtown to south of Grand Central where they reversed again. Then then proceeded north into track 1 of the shuttle)

Three of the museum R-Type ran on track 4 of the 42nd Street Shuttle from 7 AM to 7 PM. The consist was 5760-6609-9306.

A train of IND Arnines ran on the BMT Broadway Line between Ditmars Boulevard and Canal Street. The consist was 100-381-484-401-1575

I also understand that a train of IRT R-Types ran on the Broadway-7th Avenue Line between 242nd Street and Times Square. If anyone has details on this train please let me know.

Many railfans came from all over the country and even overseas for this event. Those that I know of are myself, Steve B/ 8th Avenue Exp., Ian Brady of Australia, Chris R-16,R 27/30, Far Rockaway A Train, the ageless Tunnelrat, Joe C, Jackson Park B Train, Milantram, northshore , Main R3664, William A Padron and Wayne Mr. Slant R-40. I was there on 10/27-29/04 and 10-27-14.

Back in 2004, I took in the IND old timers for as long as I could on Friday the 29th before heading out to LGA. By the time I got through security, my flight was boarding.

I remember it well. On the 27th, that train ran express along Broadway between 57th St. and Canal St. On the 28th and 29th, it ran local. Not that I really minded. I always love to hear those old timers accelerate - literally music to my ears!

I do not believe so. There were only on the BMT for testing purposes. There were a limited number of runs each day and they were only assigned to one line, No. 4 Sea Beach Express. I have seen some photographs that indicate that the signage was either cardboard or heavy paper. Does anyone know for sure?.

In the early 1950s, a number of IND R1-9 cars were assigned to the BMT Southern division, running on the #2 Fourth Ave. Local, so at least these cars would have had some BMT readings, including "ASTORIA VIA TUNNEL" which would have been used in this service.

I wonder what the BMT crews must have thought about having to change the taillights manually since all BMT prewar equipment had taillights that changed from red to white with the throwing of the reverser not to mention the lack of tripcocks that could be reset from the cab and the lack of a safety interlock to prevent the train from moving with the doors open.

By the way, for those of you who don’t know, when the R-1/9s and later the R-10s and 16s first operated on the BMT the bulkhead doors between cars were kept locked the same as on the steels even though the shorter end excess made it unnecessary. For a short period when the R-27s first started operating on the BMT, they too had the doors locked between cars until someone finally realized that the same safety issue did not exist and the doors were ordered unlocked.

There is another picture of a pre-war R unit with IND typeface BMT signage at a station along the Sea Beach. That one is likely a more modern date.

I know that, but there were certain features that the R-1s could have had without infringing on the BMT’s patents. The taillights could have been made changeable from the cab by using a switch in the cab like the R-6s and up had.

The reason for using the steeplecab I cannot unfortunately answer, maybe someone else can.

I do recall hearing traction motor hum on the trip late in the afternoon - someone said they were running under their own power then.

Again, sorry for not having more details. I was 16 then and a new railfan - very new: I was still learning about R-numbers etc. I heard someone talking about an R-10 and had to ask what it was. I had only known them as post-war IND cars, and the IRT's Lo-V's* as "old IRT cars" which is how my Dad used to refer to both of them.

*which I just missed in regular service, might have ridden them in '56 or '57 on the Lex local (maybe even a Hi-V once) but I don't remember.

You would very likely have picked up the difference if you got a Hi-V on the Lex Lcl since Pelham used Gibbs cars almost exclusively and they had full cabs and consequently no RFW.

Did they not want to run the Triplexes under their own power, or were they incapable of doing so?

Steve: This happened more than once on fantrips with the steeple cab and the D-Types. The idea was to give railfans the treat of having there train by by a locomotive. Nevertheless there were time during the trips when the triplexes did all the pushing and the steeple cab just went along for the ride.

Correct. What is interesting is that the Composites as built were also “Merry Widows” but had their end vestibules and cabd reconfigured when they were transferred to the els. Since the vestibules were 6 in shorter than the vestibules on the deck roofers and the rest of the IRT fleet so the cabs on the reconfigured Composites bellied out a bit. When a group of Gibbs cars were converted to MUDC in the 1930s, although a sliding storm door was added, the sliding “Merry Widow” vestibule doors remained and the former end door simply functioned as a door to cover the controls when the cab wasn’t in use.
