What is interesting is that the Composites as built were also “Merry Widows” but had their end vestibules and cabd reconfigured when they were transferred to the els. Since the vestibules were 6 in shorter than the vestibules on the deck roofers and the rest of the IRT fleet so the cabs on the reconfigured Composites bellied out a bit. When a group of Gibbs cars were converted to MUDC in the 1930s, although a sliding storm door was added, the sliding “Merry Widow” vestibule doors remained and the former end door simply functioned as a door to cover the controls when the cab wasn’t in use. |
