[PHOTOS] "A" Division Oldies

QX #1632 minus it's mate. Is this East 180th St shops ? (Nov. 14, 1956)
image host

Fordham Rd. on the 3rd Ave el. (Oct. 1966)
image host

#4 Lexington Ave Exp. and Lo V work motors on the New Lots Line at the tunnel portal.
image host

Somewhere on the 3rd Ave el with 1939 WF south motor with 8 Gun Hill Road as the destination sign.
Is Lo-V #5290 a museum car ?

image host

This was an idea that failed. Louvers in the door panels that didn't do much to improve ventilation. An R-10 also had these and that failed too.
image host

This is not the #7 line, but 22nd Ave Bay Parkway on the Culver Line.
Back in the early 60's I observed what I believed was a train of R-16's going back and forth on the middle track.
I believe it was for motorman training. (Aug. 8, 1964)

Museum Lo- V's on Fan Trip on Dyre Ave line north of Baychester Ave ?
Back then the wood ties leftover from the NYW&B were still there.

New R-36's at Times Square when it was a terminal.

Something odd about #9039. Is the roof painted black ? Queensboro Plaza is the location. (May 29, 1964)

An R-17 & R-33ML seen from the LIRR World's Fair station. (May 2, 1964)

Regarding R-16s on the Culver middle, they were used for M/M training for what was then the “qualifying practical.” A train of R-17s was used on the middle tk of the Jerome Line in the Bronx. Candidates who lived in Manhattan and the Bx took the test on the Jerome. Candidates who lived in Bkln Qns and SI took the test in Bkln. Those candidates who passed the written test were required to take a qualifying practical which was not graded but merely rates on a pass or fail basis. Candidates were required to make 3 stops after accelerating the first time and when asked by the examiner they were to indicate the speed they were going by stepping on a pedal in the cab. At that time trains had no speedometers so M/M were expected to be able to judge the speed of their trains within a few MPH. The actions were recorded on some sort of a device equipped with a tape like an oversized lie detector. I don’t know exactly what happened the day I took my test but the tape got pretty badly tangled up but at least we didn’t have to retake the test because of it.

The M/Ms’ list was published in the Chief since the practical had no effect on the candidates’ test grades and initially, we were all appointed provisionally pending the results of the practical. A few candidates who scored high on the written test, failed the practical and when the list was made permanent the following year, the ones who failed dropped in seniority behind those who passed. The test was in 1968 and we were made permanent by the summer of 1969 and from what I was told, that was the last M/Ms’ test that had a qualifying practical. Candidates who passed the next written test were made permanent and went through a period of “acclamation” which was basically the same as before but did not disqualify a person from being a M/M unless he was so horrendous that there was no hope at all. Also since AFAIK there was no recorder to actually measure the candidates’ performance who passed of failed was left more to the discretion of the Motorman Instructor.

Nice pictures. Just one correction, your 4 train and work Low-V is at the portals on the Jerome Ave Line, not the Utica portals on the New Lots Line. The building on the right gave it away. Utica portal from a vista like this would be in Lincoln Terrace Park. Thanks for sharing.

Hmm, I was wondering why the 4 had an Atlantic Av destination. At first I thought it might be deadheading to Livonia Yard after the rush hour, but then it would have had a Utica destination (or even run in service to Newlots and then to yard).

Hello Bill M (Newkirk)

The FIRST photo is IRT 3rd Ave EL ex-BMT QX Motor Car # 1634-A (NOT 1632) and is seen stored along the track on the east wall side of the IRT E.239th Street Shops. QX Motor Car 1634-A was a backup Revenue Collection Car to relieve the 1878 built IRT EL revenue Collection control-trailer Car "G" .

Note the flat car with MUDC Cars work train behind it - one month later the Wooden EL cars (Q's and MUDC's) were all gone from service by Dec. 16th, 1956 from the Bronx 3rd Ave EL, replaced by 6 car trains of all motor standard-body Steinway Cars. Some MUDC Work motors lasted until 1958 !!

The THIRD photo is looking N/W from the embankment above the E.159th Street Tunnel Portal of the IRT Woodlawn-Jerome Line just below the (original) Yankee Stadium and the E. 161St St EL Station

The FOURTH Photo is looking north to a S/B 3rd Ave El local entering the E. 200th Street (Bedford Pk Blvd) EL Station. The train at right could be the Museum train with the Museum TRAILER car

Bill: Immediately north of Fordham Road the el expanded to four tracks.North of this point there was a three track turnout leading to the Bronx Park Terminal.

The three track mainline continued north along Westchester Avenue. The center track was removed sometime after 1955. A section of the center track was retained at the north end. It was used for off hour layup for trains. It extended from Gun Hill Road to a point south of 204th St (Anyone have the correct location of the bumper?)

But the car with the #8 roll sign is not 5290 itself but a W/F in the 5600 series. What I have mentioned before in some posts on this topic is that since the R-12s and even the 14s had #8 signs for possible use on the Astoria Line, I don’t understand why the word “Astoria” under the number 8 wasn’t simply painted out so that the number could be displayed properly instead of the word “Shuttle."

Hello again Bill

Well, IRT Redbird's answer to you got the track layout correct -- but the roadway street-name wrong.

The EL went north past the tower which controlled the Bronx Park terminal interlocking. 3 tracks became 4 tracks northward for a short distance. Bronx Park stub and station was closed November 14, 1951. The 3 mainline tracks went left (N/W) about 40 degrees and crossed over the below 4 track NY Central RR Main which also had its own Fordham Rd Station in an open cut parallel to and below the EL.

The EL again turned slightly right about 40 deg. and ran OVER
" WEBSTER " Avenue (and not WESTCHESTER Avenue) continuing north above same to Gun Hill Road, where it very sharply turned east (right ) to run over Gun Hill Road and connect to the White Plains Rd EL.

The 3rd Ave. EL's Fordham Tower was closed sometime soon after 1957 as it was no longer needed to connect the by then much downsized (since 1950) interlocking that connected both mainline local tracks with the express track.

The Q's and remaining few consists of IRT MUDC's were stored (since 12/17/1956) thru 1957 and into very early 1958 along the center track, which still had its old EL type 3rd rail. The center track was used only for "extras" layups after 1959 north of Fordham Road for rush hour run extra Steinways consists.

The tower was accessed by stairways from the track catwalk up to the north facing wall of the tower and its entry door. Tho stripped and abandoned -- and doors locked -- any person (vandal or railfan, or otherwise, heh) could go down to the track catwalk of the abandoned express track and walk north under & past the tower - turn around, and climb the stairs and take photos or "whatever".

I did it one night back around 1962. I was taking night shots on the EL's various stations in B&W and ran out of film -- used up two 12 exposure rolls of 120 Verichrome Pan B&W Film. So I didn't get "that shot" ! Just don't get caught, tho ! Regardless, get your shot quick and "get outta town" (away from the scene there)

Bill - you may be interested in this. Some of those photos I took are (and more will be as I am still "expanding the page and its content) installed on my Facebook page called - "THE LATE GREAT BRONX 3rd AVE. EL" - with loads of mostly my own shot 1955 thru 1960's excellent quality Color Slides and B&W Photos of the EL. It is a "public" page but you still may have to be signed in to Facebook. Not sure.

Anyway, you can click PHOTOS in the menu column, and ALBUMS on that page. And then click on SEE ALL. I have an ALBUM set up for each station and its vicinity -- so far now only up to E. 171st St Station from E. 149th St Station --- a work in progress as I head northward.
It sure has generated a lot of page-reader nostalgia for the old Bronx segment EL they remember growing up.

THE LATE GREAT BRONX 3rd AVENUE EL

Thank you for your answer. I do have a question for you. The center track at the north end of the el was retained for off hour layouts after 1955. How far south did it go? I want to say somewhere between 204th Street and Bedford Park.

Hello IRT Redbird

Re: Westchester Ave -- I figured a slight brain slip was the real reason -- I have been there - done that (red faced)- heh !

In 1958 a few blocks long portion of center track from E. 151st Street north to the center of the E. 156th Street local station was used for layups and had a south-facing cheap simple pipe bumper installed at the center of that E. 156th St Station. The center track was fitted with subway style covered 3rd rail and was used possibly for layup trains south to 149th St terminal for PM rush hour quick relay pickups. And possibly for occasional work trains. By 1963 the south facing pipe bumper on the E.156th St center track was removed and re-located (** see further down below)

At the E. 152nd St area, the original mid 1954 installed switches were kept intact from both Local tracks to and from the express track. Those were previously needed and used by 3rd Ave EL expresses to get to and from the Local Tracks at E. 149th Street Station since Nov. 1954. That was when the express track THRU that station was boarded over to make a very wide single island platform for the impending 5-12-1955 late PM permanent terminal station.

The south portion of the center track just below that simple E. 152nd Street interlocking ended at a MASSIVE Wooden Beams bumper, and the center trackway was fully removed southward in 1958 from below that bumper to the interlocking " X " crossovers at the north end of the 149th St Terminal Station.

The removed center track now openly exposed twin track girders were walled off by pipe catwalk railings on those facing-sides of both local tracks. That short center-track removal was to provide more daylight onto the Avenue below the EL in the then very busy Bronx HUB Shopping area along the EL between E. 149th to E.152nd Street. But, by 1963 the covered subway type 3rd rails on that short center track along with the 4 switches, were removed from 152nd St north to center of the E. 156th Street Station, to finally abandon that track.

I have my photos of that (those) bumpers.

The center track actually was, after 1958, also layup-train-used between E. 174th street Station north to 210th Street Station using interlocking north of E. 177th Street Station to get 2 and from both local tracks. It was fitted with covered subway style 3rd rail. By that time the much truncated minor interlocking just north of Fordham Rd Station was also removed as then being totally un-necessary.

(**) A cheap simple pipe iron type Bumper was placed on the center track facing north around 1963 at the somewhat middle point of the E. 174th street station to discontinue any more layups on the by then totally abandoned center track below (south of) that point down to E. 152nd Street Bumper. By 1958 the center track 3rd rail south of 174th Street was still the old EL style uncovered contact rail, to just behind the south-facing bumper at E. 156th Street station was fully removed, deactivating that section of center track fully.

The Center track had subway style covered 3rd rail installed around 1959 from 174th Street north to Gun Hill Road trackage after the 1958 installed subway type covered 3rd rail was installed entirely along both local tracks which still had ALL the old EL style 3rd rail --
( but WITHOUT its wooden safety back-boards which were removed by end of 1956, so subway car "paddle contact shoes" could ride upon it ) -- removed and replaced with covered subway style 3rd rail.

That E. 174th St. Station bumper was then removed around 1963-64 and moved north and installed at a point on the center track on the high ornamental concrete deck ballasted EL over Webster Avenue 2 blocks south of 200th Street local station. The covered 3rd rail and hardware between those center track locations was then removed and salvaged elsewhere.

Around that time, work crews removed ALL interlocking outside the north end of Tremont Avenue Station as no longer needed. Sometime in 1968 that center track bumper was AGAIN then pulled from below E. 200th St Station and relocated just below the 204th Street local station. The Covered 3rd rail on that track, south of that new bumper, then un-needed, was also removed, salvaged for other uses.

These continued changes outlined were likely because of much diminished 24 hour ridership on the EL thru the 1960's (excepting the very short AM & PM rush hour peak periods) and the pending removal of 5 car locals to become 4 car R-12 SMEE class locals after November 1969. Only a few (likely 4 or 5 consists) off-peak layups of 4-car trains, were needed by 1970 and they could be easily stored between 204th & 210th Street Stations. And as such, the reason the center track bumper was relocated just south of the 204th st. station, where it remained until 4-29-1973 end of all service on the EL.

A lot of collective history tidbits -- can't be told very simply to be historically effective. But is all old dinosaur food now, heh

Hello Asgard -

YES - you are correct -- it IS looking north at southbound 204th St Station -- and a !@#$%^&* brain fart typo slip on my part -- THANKS for noticing and the quick correction. I didn't even catch my own typo....but self- editing can't be done of this forum format after posting !

Joe: Thank you for that detailed answer. I have archived it.

I was on the el at 149th Street in October 1954. I remember seeing the workmen boarding over the center track.

I know that in from about 1961 onwards peak service called for eleven five car trains. Once the R-12's were introduced in October 1969 only eight four car trains were needed.

Hello Bill

I have been on FB for over a year and I get no spam on my email -- but you can set up a throw-away Yahoo (or other) email acct. to use just for facebook.

I set it to be a "Public View" and can be viewed by guests ! I see it is "public" and I can see it myself without me being signed in to facebook. I tried that !

You open the (my F/B) page -- and a popup asks you to join up or sign in to Facebook. Below that it shows "NOT NOW " -- click on " NOT NOW "and the page and photos immediately opens up fully to view to you as a "guest".

Re: your photo -- trolley tracks under the EL still visible -not paved over yet - I would mark it between 1949 and 1954 and those MUDC's are still doing Manhattan Service. The uncovered El style 3rd rail still has its higher wooden safety backboard ! View looking south at S. end of E. 210St Local Station.

When the Q's and MUDC's were in center track dead storage layup all thru 1957 -- the center tracks they were on got dull and rusted as the trains did not move on them in dead storage.

Those center track rails seen here in your photo are in regular and polished use - and with 5 car layup trains. The Bronx only 3rd Ave EL by and after Fri. 5-13-1955, used 6 car Q's and 6 car MUDC's - and 6 car all-motor Steinways from 12-16-1956 until the 1961-2 period when they went to 5 car trains (Low-V mid train trailer)

Hello Elkeeper

As I have found repeatedly -- those old "aerial maps" BY NYCDOITT and even the Pennsylvania areial photo sites (Penn Pilot), and NETR Historical Aerials -- frequently incorrectly mis-dated by a year, 2, 3 or more.

Below is the OFFICIAL and verifiable Bronx Park Station info:

3rd Avenue EL Bronx Park (west) Terminal Dates:

Opened May 21, 1902; -- 118 years ago in 2020
Closed November 14, 1951; -- 68 years ago in 2020

Ie; I saw an aerial photo that showed an area of US Route 1 Highway aka The Lincoln Highway, in Trevose, lower Bucks County, PA, (and it is called the Roosevelt Blvd over the Philly county line) interchange with PA Route 132 Street Road -- as rebuilt and redesigned with a new wider diverted "new" Street Road passing UNDER US 1 Highway. And the "old" long-original parallel narrow 2 lane Street Road crossing at grade to US Route 1 but at that time shown as cut off and barricaded there as a dead end - in an aerial DATED FOR 1968.

WRONGO !!! -- because I drove my car many times all thru 1968 across the original 2 lane narrow Old Street Rd up to and where it was crossing the old 4 Lane US 1 at grade.

The re-construction of the interchange construction didn't happen until mid to late 1969 and I drove on the dirt bypass so Rt. 1 could curve in a semi circle diversion around the excavations for the "new" wider Street Road to pass under the Highway. And the whole shebang was finished and the newly built interchange opened by 1970. And the now called "Old" Street Road rose uphill (as it does today) and since very early 1970 dead ends at a barrier immediately where it use to cross the early US Rt. 1.

So, that "1968" map was really showing an aerial of the by early 1970 completed interchange and should have been dated 1 9 7 0 (NOT 1968)

I can list many other error date examples I found , but I think you get the point.

ANOTHER SAMPLE:

WIKIPEDIA described the E. 84th Street Station of the 3rd Ave El to be
a TWO LEVEL "Express" station with 2 platforms at lower level and two platforms at a single upper track level. (It no longer shows that anymore, as I broke their stones to correct it -- took me a year to get thru to those clods)

I LIVED by that EL station -- it was a LOCAL station with a passing thru center express track and a separate station house building and outside platform for each of the 2 local tracks. As built in 1878 and the same as demolished at end of October 1955.

The "actual" station description on WIKIPEDI was in fact for the 2nd Ave EL's E. 86th Street 2-level "hump" express station. It took me ONE YEAR to get them to correct their mis-write via using all the data and images I provided them. Not weeks - but 1 YEAR !!

I rest my case !

Regards - Joe F

Joe, I know that the demolition of the Bergen Ave Cutoff began in 1949. It was razed from north of 143rd St el station to the junction of the subway portal. I had always thought the removal of the Westchester Ave spur took place towards the end of this project.
