R-42 Retirement Run

Posted by Pelham Exp on Sun Feb 9 11:21:20 2020

First, wanted to let folks know that the R-42 Retirement run is a go for next Wednesday February 12th. The program for the morning is being finalized and we anticipate that folks will begin to arrive at around 9:00am and that the train will leave the Museum for its last run at around 9:45.

Final Run of the R-42
So long, and thanks for all the trips
The historic R-42 is making its final run on Wednesday, February 12, on the A line. See the approximate schedule below:

Leaves Euclid Avenue at 10:30 AM to go to Far Rockaway, making all A stops along the way
Leaves Far Rockaway at 11:30 AM to go to 207 St, making all A stops along the way
Leaves 207 St at 1:30 PM to go back to Euclid Av, making all A stops
About the Historic R-42
R-42s first rolled out in 1969, eventually totaling 400 cars in our fleet. The first cars were used on the BMT Broadway Line, known today as the N train.

1969 was a big year: Sesame Street debuted, the New York Mets won the World Series, Woodstock drew over 350,000 people to a farm in upstate New York, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon.

Along with the R-32, the R-42 is the only post-war car to reach the 50-year service mark. The R-32 still run on the A and C.

The R-42 were featured in the famous “car vs. subway chase” in William Friedkin’s 1971 thriller The French Connection. The two cars, #4572 and #4573 became part of New York Transit Museum’s collection.

Seated capacity on the R-42 is 44, and they were the first car type to arrive in service completely air-conditioned.

A majority of the fleet was retired between 2006 and 2009. About 50 cars remained in service on the J and Z lines. Some of the retired cars were sunk in the Atlantic Ocean as part of an artificial reef program.

The R-42 was the last car type to be designed as "married pairs," which means the two cars are semi-permanently linked together.

Beware of kids cutting school armed with screwdrivers, etc. to grab "memorabilia".

Can't find a cop till after the fact. Need 1 cop per car for the entirety.

And that's not going to happen.

There is an R27 or R30 around that is restorable for excursion service. Perhaps an R42 (or R32 if better match operationally) of the opposite gender could be held back from scrap and mated to it so it can run.

I remember the last run of the slants. Made it up to 207th St on a Friday before sundown. Then someone ordered the train to make another trip south, in service, to Euclid Ave and drop out into Pitkin Yd. for a photo op for the employees who worked on the cars. All those people who thought that they were on the last run were actually on the next to the last run.

As I mentioned in another post, while the R-42 was the first car type in which all the cars in the contract were air conditioned, the last 100 R-40 slants and all 100 R-40Ms were the first air conditioned cars on the NYCTS and that’s not counting the last 10 R-38s which also had A/C. I won’t count the 10 R-17s with A/C since unlike the other cars I mentioned those cars had the A/C removed and replaced with fans.

Not that I have anything against saving 4572/73 but a mixed married pair of an R-40M and an R-42 would have been interesting to show the similarities and slight differences between the 2 types of cars. The same actually could have been done or could maybe still be done with an R-32 and an R-38 to show the variations between the 2 types of cars.

I'm sorry that I probably won't be able to make it. But I'm glad they're doing a "last run". I hope it's well attended.

I note that they say that "The first cars were used on the BMT Broadway Line, known today as the N train".

It was known as the N in 1969 as well!!!

I remember riding the E from WTC to 179th daily in the summer of 1968 when the consists were usually a hodgepodge of R38s and R40s. One quickly learned to identify the air-conditioned cars from the exterior roof vents and dive for those cars in the sweltering heat. It took many years for air-conditioning to become the norm system-wide with older rolling stock retrofitted as well as the R42s forward all being air-conditioned. Of course, now some stations are more unbearable than ever in the summer heat. I nearly expired in the Union Square station once last summer from the oppressive heat. The trains now generate so much heat and station ventilation is often terribly inadequate.

And in 1959-60 with the R27's, though they didn't appear on that route very much.
