I remember riding the E from WTC to 179th daily in the summer of 1968 when the consists were usually a hodgepodge of R38s and R40s. One quickly learned to identify the air-conditioned cars from the exterior roof vents and dive for those cars in the sweltering heat. It took many years for air-conditioning to become the norm system-wide with older rolling stock retrofitted as well as the R42s forward all being air-conditioned. Of course, now some stations are more unbearable than ever in the summer heat. I nearly expired in the Union Square station once last summer from the oppressive heat. The trains now generate so much heat and station ventilation is often terribly inadequate. |
