Funny that Atlantic Beach - Point Lookout and Fire Island have always done just fine without Robert Moses. Parts of Fire Island have Dunes. That's what saved parts of them from Sandy. All done without Robert Moses fucking up everything.

Take a satellite view of the entire stretch of Fire Island. There is no way you can run parkway down there without knocking down most of the houses in every settlement from Kismet to Davis Park.

By the 1930's, neither the IND, nor the Port Authority had any real interest in subway service on the lower level of the GWB. Ditto for the original 2 center lanes of the upper level, which were supposed to bring Public Service streetcars over the bridge. If you look at any of the proposed rail plans for the lower level, no routes had been really designed for the Jersey side. Back then, they were content with letting the Jersey buses terminate at 168th St & Broadway. Robert Moses also was not connected to the Port Authority of NY & NJ, so it did not concern him.

No they aren't because he destroyed countless small businesses to build them.

First, how could it possibly be countless? You know that there are maps from before the CBE was built so that you can literally count the businesses.

But semantics and hyperbole aside, the Cross-Bronx runs mostly mid-block, so the impact on businesses would have been minor. In fact, The Power Broker goes into detail as to the number of residences destroyed (so obviously not "countless"), but makes scarce mention of businesses, probably due to the number being unimpressive.

And there are no superblocks near the CBE in East Tremont. So no additional buildings were destroyed that were not in the way of the highway and its ramps, except elsewhere in the Bronx where the CBE destruction had no effect.

On a tiny scale, look at downtown Hicksville. State DOT decided in the early 1960's to widen all the roads. So half the downtown business on one side of the street were bulldozed. They have never recover from that. They didn't try that shit in Huntington or Old Northport.

Moses had nothing to do with that. That kind of thing was done all over the country. Meanwhile, there are plenty of downtowns that suffered no demolition but where nevertheless decimated by shopping malls. Your citing of Hicksville is a weird example as it looks to me that there are stores on both sides of the street and not an unusual number of vacancies.

"The building of this new highway system meant that over 60,000 residents would have to be uprooted and relocated to new areas. Most of these people lived in South Bronx. Moses led the white exodus out of the Bronx. Most of the white residents moved to either Westchester or Northern Bronx areas and other moved to small suburban houses being built around the Cross Bronx Expressway in New Jersey. The poorer residents who where given a meager $200 per room compensation were forced to move out and settle in new high-rise apartment buildings that were being built. These new behemoths had could include up to 1700 apartments per building.

As a result of this mass relocation the economy of the Bronx suffered immensely. The South Bronx area lost over 600,000 manufacturing jobs. Youth unemployment rose to 40 percent and in some areas as high as 80 percent. The most devastating affect of the Cross Bronx Expressway took place when the newly built apartment buildings passed into the hands of slumlords. "

Yes. All he needed to do was create enough space between the two sets of travel lanes to allow subway trains to rise from the Queens Boulevard tunnel, run along the highway at grade and then go back down when the road reached the airport. Moses wouldn't even consider it because he hated the idea of anything competing with his roads.

Moses was Jewish by accident of birth and tried to hide the fact that he was Jewish. He was never circumcised (according to Robert Caro), did not have a bar mitzvah and had zero connection to anything or anyone Jewish. His two wives were Gentiles. He intentionally barred Israel from having an exhibit at the 1964-65 World's Fair and threatened to sue the publishers of a book of prominent Jews in New York City if they named him in the book. He refused to campaign in Jewish neighborhoods when he ran for governor in the 1930's.

Anyone who hated Robert Moses for being Jewish really must hate Jews, because Moses was about as non-Jewish a Jew as anyone who ever lived.

The northern outer reaches of the London Underground are like that due to government interference: The Metropolitan Green Belt.

The establishment of the Green Belt is why work on the Northern Heights Project on the Northern Line did not resume after the war and therefore why it has that stub to Mill Hill East from the High Barnet branch.
