My guess is to have full length trains available when full service is restored. Cutting up trains & re-assembling them is labor intensive, logistically difficult & rough on the equiptment. Similar to the Flushing line inasmuch for the past 40 yrs or so had 11 car trains running at 3 in the morning. Bottom line, Cheaper to keep a full consist together, both in labor costs and wear & tear on the equiptment. |

However, the Rock Pk shuttle is 4 car R-46 trains 24/7 so no cutting or adding is necessary. As for the Lefferts Shuttle, merely cutting an 8 car R-46 train at night and adding it back up in the morning is not that labor intensive at all. If cutting and adding is that rough on the equipment, then there is a severe problem with the manufacturing standards since for years older cars like R-9s, and later equipment were cut and added with relative regularity and little if any difficulty. |

All I'm doing is telling you what I was told while I was an active employee when they stopped cutting.Car equipment suits felt all this adding and cutting was putting too much stress on the electric portions leading to failures (especially doors failing to open), which led to lower MDBF which led to car equipment looking bad. Again, I am just being the messenger here, this is not necessarily my opinion. As far as RTO is concerned, cutting and adding will create more jobs (which costs money) and RTO will need to find additional overnight layup spots. In the case of Lefferts, they cut 2 trains for 3 OPTO t/o's and leave 4 cars in the station. The switchman is able to easily do those cuts and adds. They also don't like to cut because of all the midnight GO's going on these days. The dispatchers pull their hair out as it is without having to deal with adds and cuts. Also, most midnight ATD jobs have been cut, which existed back in the day. |

When I first started with the TA in 1966, there were no midnight ATDs at any of the BMT terminals and a few IND terminals didn’t have them either |

When they realized how expensive & hard on the equiptment this process was, they just went back to leaving the 11 car consists alone. |

Not only that but 11 cars were an odd consist when it came to cutting. On the mainline IRT lines, in the days of the Hi-Vs and Lo-Vs, the express lines which were 10 cars would cut to 5 car trains for midnight service and lay up alternate arriving 10 car trains. In the morning, the 5 car trains were added to make 10s and additional 10 car trains were put in as solid consists. On the Flushing Line every train that was going to remain in service had to have the 3 car butt cut from the north end (The R-33 single was always one of the 3 north cars) and each one had to be laid up separately which was more labor intensive than just splitting trains evenly. |
