Re: R179+R46+R32 on the Rockaway (S) Shuttle

Not only that but 11 cars were an odd consist when it came to cutting. On the mainline IRT lines, in the days of the Hi-Vs and Lo-Vs, the express lines which were 10 cars would cut to 5 car trains for midnight service and lay up alternate arriving 10 car trains. In the morning, the 5 car trains were added to make 10s and additional 10 car trains were put in as solid consists. On the Flushing Line every train that was going to remain in service had to have the 3 car butt cut from the north end (The R-33 single was always one of the 3 north cars) and each one had to be laid up separately which was more labor intensive than just splitting trains evenly.
