The Plan for Action envisioned subway service along the local tracks of the Harlem Line, which could then jump up to this section and continue to Gun Hill Rd. I don't know if, and in fact I doubt, that any actual engineering or feasibility analysis was undertaken- but it was at least considered.

Its a set of newly arrived R16s. IIRC they were delevered from the factory in a olive-drab color. Its an old picture scanned on a inexpensive canon scanner/printer. Much might have been lost in "translation". Your eyes are just fine!

The R-16s, and R-21s through 30s (except for the R-29s which were red) were painted olive drab which the contract books referred to as “subway green” The R-1/9s were also that color. The B of T and TA broke with the green tradition with the R-10s through 15s and the R-17. Why the R-16s were subway green and their sister IRT cars the R-17s were maroon I don’t know.

I think there might have been a very few R-27s also painted in the redbird scheme but those were definitely not GOHed although in retrospect, they probably should have been.

You can't believe how cold it was that night. And the R42 was never known for good cab heat. I was trying to hide my hand to warm it up as it was out for the entire trip holding down the controller. Between stations I was able to hide my right hand.

No matter how cold, I never liked wearing gloves while operating, except toward the end when we were forced to.

One Sunday afternoon while the J was going to 121, I boarded an R16 for a scheduled trip. A very old man was standing at the RFW who struck up a conversation with me. Turns out he was a retired car maintainer who worked at ENYD. He told me he worked on those cars from day 1. His first impression of them was the word "garbage". I told him they still weren't good performers and that the GE's were all long retired. To which he replied that they were the worst ones.

Of course after I closed the cab door and started the trip, I figured that the old cars, the Standards and Q types and perhaps others that were in ENY during his time were probably much easier to maintain.

In any event, I'm sure that's why the el was painted from that point north...

And yes, it would have been a good plan- avoid an upgrade to the el, and make good use of local stations on the Harlem (and add a few of course). Alas...

The GE control package on the R-16s through 22s were unique in that they had a blower cooled resistor bank instead of air cooled like the WH and later GEs. I don’t recall the IRT GE cars with this package causing as much trouble as the R-16s, however.

Actually, the R-30 GOHs were different from the IRT redbirds. The IRT redbirds received either a NYAB Newtran brake system or a WABCO RT-2 brake package which replaced the variable load valves of SMEE equipment with the load sensor of RT-2 equipment and the ME42B brake valves with either a Newtran or an ME43 brake valve. The IRT GOHs also had an alternator installed to power the car body lights whereas the GOH R-30s retained the original timer to reverse the polarity. The IRT R-26s and 28s also had the H2CA drawheads on the #2 ends of the cars replaced by drawbars like the R-29s while the R-30s retained the couplers on the #2 ends.

Most of the BMT el structures, especially in the Eastern lacked outside catwalks, which I suspect is the reason that the stop arms on the BMT were placed on the left side of the track as opposed to the right side like the IRT which did have catwalks. As late as 1969 when I was a M/M while many of the other eastern Div els received catwalks, the A Line to Lefferts, formerly BMT still lacked them.

T/Os are “forced” to wear gloves? When did that start because when I was a M/M I never liked wearing gloves to operate and I’m sure the MTA would rather have a T/O operate a train well without gloves than poorly with them.

Maybe 6-7 years ago, as I've been retired for almost 5.

A bulletin came out basically saying that "to reduce hand injuries.....", blah, blah, blah...…...all t/o's (and I believe c/r's too) had to wear gloves (only the ones issued to you).

You may not know that sometime before that they locked the cab seats on the R46's because they had some hand/finger injuries when the crews adjusted the cab seat. The only problem was it wasn't done (locked) for the benefit of most t/o's. Some seats were too close to the console (if you had long legs a problem), some seats were too low (even for me at 5"9') I had to strain my neck to look up, and all other combinations. Whatever position the seat was in when the guy in the barn locked it is where it stayed.

Why? Because managements philosophy on injuries is when any injury happens to one person, steps must be taken that this injury doesn't happen to anybody else ever again. And that goes for all injuries, especially lost time ones (Workman's Compensation). Sounds good, but with all the t/o's and c/r's we have injuries will occur. Then the suits downtown compare our injuries with those of other systems. That is unfair because of the disparity of t/o's and c/r's (if they have them).

The LIRR Atlantic Avenue el before the rebuild lacked them on the engineer's side. It's funny that the lack of them gives the impression the train could more easily fall off the track without them.
