Re that 1983 centennial bus parade - this was one year before 4789 was rebranded as "2969" and masqueraded as "the Jackie Gleason bus" (the actual such bus was retired and scrapped around 1967 after the A/C batwinged Fishbowls arrived on OA and TA properties). I was at a "Honeymooners" convention at the C.W. Post campus in Greenvale, LI in 1984, and the ersatz "2969" was already making the rounds even then.

That Tramway became a major tourist attraction and is still going today.

Remember riding it a few times in the 1970's/early '80s but not since.

In all my time living in Wash Hts, The only time I ever saw “Bway Thru Exp” displayed was prior to the west side changes of 1959 when select Bway expresses operated as thru expresses between 96 St and 137 St bypassing the intermediate stations and that was discontinued by the time the Bway exp was 100% R types. The trains that ran the pseudo exp service N/O 137 St carried the side signs “Local-Exp” the same as the Pelham expresses at the time.

Ir memory serves, The original plan for the LIRR East Side Access when the 63 St LIRR Tunnel was built in the 1970's was a terminal at 59 St & 2 Av at the site of the Roosevelt Island Tram Terminal. It was designed as a coordinated transportation center.

FALSE! The terminal, called the "Midtown Transportation Center" would have been at 48th and 3rd.

I'd heard that as well. So I guess LIRR trains coming through the 63 St Tunnel would have turned south on 3rd Avenue- and had their own stop near Grand Central, as opposed to underneath it...

Among the plans floated that I seem to recall was a plan to actually go into GCT itself using tracks freed up by removal of Amtrak service to Penn. They of course would have to be separate due to the 3rd rail difference between M/N and LIRR.

I heard that too. The plan was to give the LIRR the west side of the Lower Level of GCT (tks 111-117). Supposedly just punch a few holes in the Park Ave Tunnel, call out the sandhogs & build a connecting spur from the 63dst tunnel & presto! LIRR trains to the existing GCT.
If they would have been able to pull that off, LIRR trains would be running there now & billions would have been saved.
What shot that idea down was incompatable cab signals, and union issues just to name a few. The 3d rail contact shoe issue was an issue then but now a contact shoe that works on both types of rail exists. AFAIK, there on all the M-8s
Plus the LIRR suits were adamant to have their own separate terminal. No one thinking about merging the LIRR & MNR back then.
So no LIRR trains to GCT for at least another 5 yrs or so.

Giving the LIRR tracks on the west side of the lower level wouldn’t have made much sense since the LIRR would be coming from the east side of Manhattan.

They probably could have given the LIRR the entire lower level (without any interoperability problems) and still had plenty of capacity on the upper level for Metro-North and saved billions of dollars and decades of construction. Or they could have made Hunterspoint Avenue into a world-class terminal for a fraction of the cost. Or they could have... But the government chose the most difficult, most expensive approach that doesn't provide benefits commensurate with its difficulty or cost.

The thought of using the west side of GCT LL was to give LIRR commuters easier access to the Shuttle, since the mindset at the time was that LIRR commuters were accustomed to going to & from the west side. LIRR service to GCT was to give commuters an additional commuting option to NYP.

I thought that the idea was to give LIRR commuters who wanted the east side more direct access.
