The plan was to give the LIRR the west side of the Lower Level of GCT (tks 111-117). Supposedly just punch a few holes in the Park Ave Tunnel, call out the sandhogs & build a connecting spur from the 63dst tunnel & presto! LIRR trains to the existing GCT.If they would have been able to pull that off, LIRR trains would be running there now & billions would have been saved. What shot that idea down was incompatable cab signals, and union issues just to name a few. The 3d rail contact shoe issue was an issue then but now a contact shoe that works on both types of rail exists. AFAIK, there on all the M-8s Plus the LIRR suits were adamant to have their own separate terminal. No one thinking about merging the LIRR & MNR back then. So no LIRR trains to GCT for at least another 5 yrs or so. |
