Years ago, when the late trainmaster George Abere was a M/M on the Rockaway Division, he encountered a car that lacked the Rockaway destination but as he scrolled through he found “Fulton-Rockaway Ave” so he set the sign for that.

If you're referring to The Illustrated Encyclopedia of New York City Subway Rollsigns and Ancillary Items, I have that book - in color! Volume 1, anyway. Cost me $300.00 but well worth every penny.

The Art Deco design of the IND station can be quite clearly seen in the last photo. Nice!

Not in 1939. It was either a plane or a blimp.

That area where Toilet Bowl I was and Toilet Bowl II is now was a parking lot then.

Those lots were a legacy of the fair that lasted until Shea was built - one of the first park and ride lots ever, I believe..

The second one shows the LIRR station. which was interesting in its own right...

Great aerial photos! Thanks so much for posting.

You can enlarge with the zoom feature, or with a little plus or minus icon that appears over the image as well.
When enlarged with the zoom feature, even up to around 300% the details are still pretty clear.

The resolution if you enlarge them is quite good. Taken originally with fine grain film maybe?

Below the entrance/fare control area(?) of the IND, is a road and busses. These look as though they were intra-fairgrounds busses transporting people around the fair (perimater?) with one stop at the IND? Looks as though too, this would mean there were stairways into the terminal from below where the bus stop was as well.

Nice overhead photos of the LIRR terminal, and the Corona yard.

IINM Walter O'Malley was offered that very same site and turned it down. Guess he didn't like the idea of the Dodgers playing in Queens.

Well, that was O'M's stated reason. One reason that I have always felt, is that O'Malley was not the kind of guy to be someone's tenant - especially not the City....

There's literally been fifty billion words written on the subject, and anything we can say on it here won't clear matters up anymore -BUT - it can probably be boiled down to this:

I think O'Malley truly believed in his Dodgerdome initially - until his bean counters quietly told him that, at least in 1955 or whatever, it was still a reach technically and financially to do. Meanwhile the Braves had moved to Milwaukee, and were starting to draw over 2 million a year there, and O'M was scared they would be able to build their farm system to be better than the Dodgers' system. Plus California was just sitting there, a rich market just waiting for the picking. So O'Malley continued to feign interest in the domed stadium, started to prepare himself for a possible California move, and make noises about whatever Moses had plans for in Queens. (He also knew it could be a good chance to make Moses and whomever was mayor took REAL bad, too)
O'Malley knew SOMEBODY was going to go into L.A., and was determined he was going to be the one, once he made his mind up tp do it.

I SORT of feel bad about some of those kids - and adults - who got a much needed life lesson on the realities of business and politics too..

MLB pioneered the extortion of stadium funding from cities for the major gladiatorial sports. IMHO the only legit team in the majors (MLB,NFL,NBA etc) is the Green Bay Packers--which is a socialist operation. It is long past time to apply the RICO statutes to major league sports and turn the tables on the "owners" be they O'Malley or Davis (Raiders) Sports venues generate transit use and often become venues for large music and other entertainment shows.

You're applying 2018 logic to a 1957 situation. I don't see how O'Malley could get caught up in a RICO beef if RICO regs were on the books then. However, in O'Malley's case, he originally wanted to stay in Brooklyn & build a ballpark over the Atlantic Ave LIRR/TA complex. Moses & Wagner said no. To many families would be uprooted via eminant domain. That was given as the reason. Today, where O'Malley wanted a new ballpark is where the Barkley Center sits

There is this misconception that Barclay Centre is on the location the pos O'Malley wanted to build his ballpark. Actually it is several blocks away. O'Malley wanted to build his park where the LIRR terminal is with the train yards on Atlantic Avenue serving as a parking lot. But the one short coming the site had and still has is the lack of highway access. As that part of the infrastructure of Brooklyn hasn't changed all that much since 1957, how would all the cars get into that area. As much as I despise Robert Moses who was a poor excuse for a human being, in this instance he was probably right. It wasn't so much Flushing that dissuaded O'Malley, it was the irresponsible offer of the city government of Los Angeles that saw the $ signs dancing in his eyes.

One thing to note however. The Brooklyn franchise was still making more money than anybody else in baseball. How I hear you cry. The Dodgers had by far the most lucrative radio-tv contract in baseball; even more lucrative than the Yankees. The Dodgers televised all home games and 2/3 of their road games on channel 9 plus the pre and post and radio rights on 1050 plus the pre and post. Since the Yankees and Giants had to share channel 11, you can see why Dodger tv rights were much more valuable. j So the Milwaukee argument is simply not true.
