The shell was completed back in 2002. The WTC is up and running and the Oculus is as well. Why is it taking so long to reopen this station?Three months ago, I rode by on a #1 train and saw some construction activity going on. But that was three months ago. Since the site above it is covered, they can only bring in work materials on work trains. Since they can't do major work during the week that means major work is done during those weekend G.O's with the 1 ending at 14th Street. |

My understanding is that the MTA never trusted any of the PA schedules for the WTC Transit Center (for good reasons), so they never got around to budgeting for the finishing out of the Corlandt station.In mid 2015 when it was clear that the WTC connections would be opening in the next year, the MTA kicked off the process to start finding money, and then hiring people to do the work. Being the MTA, from the time they got serious about finishing the station to the time it will open is 3-4 years. |

From my personal observation, the 2002 shell has been demolished, and most of the line daylighted through there while they build the Oculus around it; most of the 2002 work was undone.In fact, at the west of the Oculus, near the PATH station, you can see that they actually built a bridge to carry the #1 through the Oculus. So basically, it seems the line was built three times- in 1918, in 2002, and again in the past few years. Now that the "tunnel" (it is even less of a tunnel than where the Concourse IND crosses the Cross Bronx Expressway) is complete, they can finally build the station. Stairs to street level (Greenwich and Cortlandt) have been in place since at least 2015. They do not look well secured... |

It was probably rebuilt with 1918-ish methods- steel reinforced concrete meant to sit below ground level.At the time, the powers that were weren't sure what they were going to do vis-a-vis rebuilding. When they decided on putting a concourse (any type of open air concourse) beneath it, a different type of structure was needed to carry the IRT through. Hence the weekend closures, and billions in cost overruns. |

That would mean this station was closed for 20 years and 19 years after the shell was completed.It only took 4 years to build the entire original Contract One IRT line, for goodness' sake. |

Before 9/11, that's how it was before - the concourse for PATH went under the #1 tunnel. That's about where the big bank of deep escalators were. |

OK then...Hmmm...my memory is getting fuzzy- I thought the #1 was just east of the big bank of escalators... Anyway, I can tell you from personal observation that the 2002 station shell was completely demolished- and a little bit of daylight still streams into the "tunnel" at the northwest part of the station they're (slowly) building right now. A few years ago (2014 or so), it was a LOT of daylight on the west side- and you could see a good deal of the Oculus from the east side. |
