NS power cut off in Newark, two ACS-64s pulled it through the North River tunnels through PSNY and to Harold Interlocking, where 4 LIRR switchers pulled it to the venue.What I still can't figure out is why LIRR had like 10 people on the locomotives. Can they not MU them and have an engineer and a fireman? |

Those extra LIRR people were electricians in case of mechanical problems and support staff for the Garden City Secondary. Flagmen for grade crossings, people to help to cut the train into sections, supervision and the like. |

To underscore, flagmen for exempt grade crossings. Unlike other grade crossings, the responsibility of avoiding an accident falls on the railroad, which is why the flagmen are needed and vehicles that normally must stop at all railroad crossings are exempt from doing so at these, which have no crossing gates or warning lights. If you see a vehicle stopping at an exempt crossing when no flagmen are present, you know that the driver does not understand what an exempt crossing is and may not understand lots of other things that he ought to know as well. |

I'm usually pro-union, but the LIRR seems to have taken union to an absurd extreme, all on the public's dime. The whole thing about getting paid twice if you operate diesel and electric in the same day is laughably absurd. This looks and smells like union work rules and ridiculous rules and procedures run amok.They have like 8-10 people on there, I lost count after two per locomotive. I would think the fireman would flag and cut the train, if there is a legitimate reason that they can't do that, maybe have a flagger/cutter in addition to the engineer and fireman. So what are the other 5 or 6 or 7 people on there doing? The freight railroads that handled this thing, as far as I can tell, had an enginer and a fireman on board, not 7 other people. Oh, and they had a protect engine following the thing. A protect engine for WHAT? They had four locomotive on the train already, plus if they needed more equipment for some reason, the train never got very far on the LIRR from the Jamaica shops. |

Mechanical problems? They were never very far from Jamaica, and the other railroads that moved the train MUCH farther didn't have 5 or 6 or 7 extra crew members on board in order to fix "mechanical problems". |

They're moving an old, decrepit, and very long train a fairly short distance over a ludicrously busy commuter line. Between the relatively short move the extra crew has to cover and the massive disruption that would occur if that thing is still on the road come rush hour, it's understandable that they'd take seemingly-excessive precautions. |

The RBBX train is not by any stretch of the imagination decrepit. It can run up to 60 or 70mph over mainline freight railroads. It is long relative to LIRR, but in the whole scheme of trains, it's barely half a train. The area where things could really go sideways are off the main line, and would only disrupt maybe the Hempstead Branch, not the main line.And then the protect engine? What the heck was that for? That just seems like a total waste! |

Yes, for the circus train, I'm guessing that they did it at cost, which was probably still, mile for mile, many times more expensive than any other move the train makes. I was referring to the normal day to day operations of LIRR, which are partially taxpayer funded, with the rest coming from commuters, who are members of the general public as well. |

The RBBX equipment fits freight clearances rather than LIRR/3rd Rail clearances. A trap open the wrong way might foul the third rail. The circus train must be A Freight Train, Period or A Passenger Train, Period. The idea that it's considered a freight train according to a contract between a freight railroad and their passenger-carrying tenant but a passenger train according to a contract between a passenger railroad and their freight-hauling tenant doesn't sit well with them. |
