Shuttle of New York City

What are or were Shuttles in New York City. Elevated, Subway, Trolleys and Busses?
Let's start off with the Grand Central 42nd Street Shuttle. The original terminal of the 3rd Ave. El was converted to a shuttle when the El was extended North. When electrification came it was operated with two car trains. A motor car and a control trailer.
There have been many more. Let's see how many of them are known.

The IRT Astoria Line shuttle service I was referring to, was the initial operation which began when the Astoria Line opened in February 1917.(1) IRT subway cars operated as a shuttle between Ditmars & Grand Central.(2)

This service lasted about five & a half months. On 7/23/1917 the 2nd Ave. el's Queensboro Bridge connection was completed to Queensboro Plaza. Going forward from 1917 the initial services were 2nd Ave. trains to astoria; IRT subway to Corona. 2nd ave el & IRT subway services later served both lines.(year needed)(3)

IRT Subway service from GC to Alburtis Ave. began April 1917.(1)

BMT subway service reached Qnsboro. Plz. in August 1920. The BMT el car shuttles on both the Astoria and Flushing lines began in April 1923.(3)

Went from 133rd St. Station of the New Haven and New York Westchester and Back RR's, The Bronx to 129 th St. 2nd and 3rd Ave. Els in Manhattan. The shuttle was later taken over by the IRT. New car deliveries for the subway and el cars and old car disposals were operated over the line. A section of the elevated ramp on the Bronx side in the NH yard remained well into the 60's and was used as a coal hopper delivery tipple.

Long answer: The only reason that the BRT kept and third railed the Hudson Ave trackage was the hope that they would someday be allowed to build their own bridge over the East River. They even received a charter from NY State to build the rail bridge in 1892, but opposition, mainly from the Manhattan side of the river, forced the BRT to give it up in 1896. The real slap in the face came when the state authorized the Williamsburgh Bridge charter, later that year. After NYC was incorporated in 1898, the BRT and the new NYC Dept of Bridges could not settle on a rental use for the el trains. (Remember, the bridge opened in 1903, but the BRT only started running its trains in 1908.) But, by 1904, the BRT realized it was useless to run a single gate car pushed/pulled by a single locomotive on the Hudson Ave spur, just to preserve the franchise- with no hope for a bridge. The Willy B had opened, talks with the City resumed, so the spur was closed on April 10th, 1904. The BRT bridge dream was dead.

They operated for a long time, the reason being the BMT's chronic subway equipment shortage. The West End version was apparently rush hour only.

The Culver version was more complicated. Until 1931 the Culver was strictly an elevated line. In 1940 elevated trains ran from 9th Avenue to Coney or Kings Highway to Coney.

Yes, at one point the elevated cars through-routed between KH Culver and Bay Parkway WE.
