If the in house workforce cannot produce within the time constraints, protecting their "turf" is detrimental to the riders. And if the "union" work is moved to a different "union" shop, (I believe Septa maintenance workers are union) there should be no complaint. Solidarity, no? |

The truck repairs or replacement will be covered, the big question is whether the contract and warranty terms allow for "consequential damages" Very often, they are excluded, or limited. The potential risk if they are open ended is too great for most companies to accept. |

I was going to say "but they probably have fewer miles on them" but then I just looked at their schedules for the A and (soon to open) B lines the Silverliners run on:A: 7 days a week, exact same schedule: 3:15AM, 3:45AM, then every 15 minutes until 6:30 PM, then every 30 minutes until 12:30 AM (1:30 AM Fridays). B: 7 Days a week, hourly all times, 5AM to 10PM, increases to half hourly during AM and PM peak M-F. This doesn't seem all that special until you realize the line only serves one stop (presumably when the G opens the infill stops will come online, as they share, and maybe it will be a combined half hourly service with the two). Meanwhile NJT is trying to rid themselves of their hourly one stop EMU line. WTF Denver, you guys skipped directly to awesome-level frequencies! |

A different article stated that SEPTA will be getting $200 per car, per day they are out of service. This starts 14 days after they were pulled. This $24,000/day should hopefully cover the extra costs. |

Avoids ridiculous drawn out litigation between HR + SEPTA, but lets them recover some of the cost. That's sound business practice, still assume open ended consequential damage claims are barred by the contract, but reasonable costs get recovered. Sort of like when they give you a loaner car if your car gets recalled for a major safety defect where they tell you to stop driving it, and don't have the parts in stock to fix it. |

Many welds are done with sticks providing the material that helps joint the 2 pieces. If they were below standard, everything else could be right, and the welds would still not be as strong as they should be over time. This is just conjecture on my part, I do not know what technique was used in this fabrication. |

If one goes back to the Silver Spring MARC v Amtrak cornfield meet of 1996, it is fairly clear that cab signals or ATS would have prevented the fatalities/fire. Mandating cab signals at least on ALL passenger + freight tracks was not something FRA was willing to do (apparently) so the other option was heavier "bank vaults" Dumb but it shifted the costs to the commuter agencies rather than forcing smarter signalling on the host RRs. Some mix of terminally stupid, regulatory capture, or anti commuter. |

One of the articles said SEPTA had the option of a more expensive, significantly stronger part made by a different manufacturer. But since they love doubling down on bad ideas, cheaping out on parts for already cheap railcars was the option chosen. |

I'm looking forward to the completion of the R line which will give the A line a side by side connection to light rail. I am very concerned that the B line will go the way of Court Street. It is essentially a one stop stub line with little chance of extension in the foreseeable future. Hopefully the attraction of the park and ride will drive people to the station but 30 minute headways are a little bit concerning because I don't believe people on the north side have figured out how to lookup a schedule (yet). |

In all my time both riding the BMT from the late 1950s and working on the BMT from the mid 1960s on, I never heard the terms “standards” or “triplexes” use by operating personnel. In the Southern Division, the 67 ft cars were referred to as “ABs” and the triplexes ad “Ds.” In the Eastern Division since there were no D types in regular service there, the 67 ft cars were referred to as “steels” and when the Multis came in they were referred to as “Multis.” From the 1950s to the present, I never heard any other terms used to describe the prewar BMT rolling stock. Since by the time I started working for the TA, with the exception of the Culver Shuttle. all the ABs were in the Eastern I personally referred to them as “steels” since I worked mostly in the Eastern. |

The problem with running shorter trains on a more frequent headway is that the passenger capacity wouldn’t be increased so that the trains would be just as crowded since passengers unable to jam themselves into an earlier train would merely wait for the next train which would probably be just as crowded. |

Actually, when the LIRR M-1s first went into service they were very problematic. In fact I read an article in the Daily News which stated that the cars were such poor performers that it was suggested that the Budd Co who manufactured them should be banned from supplying any more railcars to the MTA. This was despite the excellent performance of the NYCTA R-32s. Once the bugs were worked out, the seemed to be relatively good performers. I once had a cab ride with a M/N engineer who told me he felt that the M/N M-1s were the best MU crash ever operated. |
