Actually, when the LIRR M-1s first went into service they were very problematic. In fact I read an article in the Daily News which stated that the cars were such poor performers that it was suggested that the Budd Co who manufactured them should be banned from supplying any more railcars to the MTA. This was despite the excellent performance of the NYCTA R-32s. Once the bugs were worked out, the seemed to be relatively good performers. I once had a cab ride with a M/N engineer who told me he felt that the M/N M-1s were the best MU crash ever operated.
