My reaction to Arnines, when I was 7-ish was the same. They were quite rare by then, and they looked, sounded, and smelled totally alien. My Mom told me that only a few years before, she rode them all the time. I thought to myself something along the lines of "I wouldn't have liked that...".

NOW, I love the Holiday train!!

Many of the BMT steels never received number boards but retained their painted numbers to the end. The same was true of the Multis and the Ds. As for BMT steels never running on any iND lines, there was a report of them running briefly on the F line as a trial.

That means the RR (just before Chrystie) ran R-38s after July 19, 1967 -- that's when the first air conditioned R-38s were placed in service (F line being the first to have them). R-38s ran on the RR in a shorter period of time than I thought.

Although the Jerome Line was pretty much 100% L0-V prior to the introduction of the R types, sometime in the late 1950s, there were a few trains of Hi-Vs transferred from Bway to Woodlawn for Lex service and yo probably ended up on a Gibbs car at the head end with the sliding “merry widow” doors open. I have also heard that sometime in the early 1950s, Flivvers were operating on Jerome as well.

On the arnines...GG/ Bklyn Queens Crosstown If I remember correctly.
On the Standards, the side display sign "95th Street 4th Ave" underneath said "Broadway Local via Tunnel"

Again to a 7 ish year old, I thought the sign was correct, we are in a tunnel! (not knowing at the time of bridge routes)

"Broadway Local" had to be right too since we were under Broadway in Queens.

But "95th St 4th Ave" threw me. Could'nt figure out that one since the station street numbers were decreasing (65th st, 46th St, 36th St...etc) as we were travelling. And where the hell is 4th Ave?

No mention of Brooklyn on any of the roll signs on the Standards running to Forest Hills, if memory serves.

Sorry, I must have read your post wrong. Ignore my other post. The 95th/4th Ave rollsign on that particular BMT Standard you're describing must have been wrong. The BMT #1 Brighton Local route did indeed ran "via Tunnel" (Montague Street Tunnel) to Forest Hills in the mid-late 50s. The route was called the "QT" in the 60s because, obviously, it used the Brighton Local via Tunnel route. But the BMT #1 Brighton Local route were already re-routed to Ditmars Blvd station by the time it was called the QT though.

First, I'd like to thank all of you who responded to my question. Never seen that many to a thread I started here.

And to answer the question I myself posted:

The oldest would be the low-V cars on the remnant of the 3rd Ave El, the Q types on the Myrtle Ave El (on the now demolished section) and the triplex units on the Broadway line.

Regarding that: My dad and I used to go to 14th St-Union Square via the F from Queens to the 34th St (then terminus) station, then the RR to 14th St (for reasons I don't remember). On the way back home, he would indulge me a little by allowing me to view thru the front window on the Triplex on the express line from 14th back to 34th.

FYI, I was born in late November 1955, and really didn't start riding trains for at least 5 to 6 years, so many of the older units were gone from the system.

When the "Q's' were rebuilt from wooden gate cars, they had steel bulkheads added at the ends. That's why they were able to use the underground tunnel to Main Street, Flushing. That's why they were too heavy for 3rd Ave local service, when they were transferred there in 1949-1950. Gate cars ran on the BMT Centre (Nassau) St Broadway-Brooklyn line until August, 1927, when the new Triplexes freed up more Standards for Eastern Division use. When not in use, some of these Bway-Bklyn gates were stored on the unused Broadway Ferry spur.

They did. When the BMT M/M first operated over QB, they had trouble stopping in the stations because the cars operated so fast. I would have loved to see how the Multis performed on the iND but unfortunately it never happened.

That could explain it then. On their home turf, back in the day, no screening. Given the attitude of the time over the Franklin, I guess I should be surprised that they didn't go with armor plate. :)

R15, I think. I do remember seeing R10s on the CC, but at that time, most of my subway riding involved the 7 and F.

I don't ever remember riding on an R-15 while they were still around. They're probably the only regular production SMEEs that I never rode on. I never rode on an R-11, either, for that matter.

Plus the fact that 8th Ave the end stop in Manhattan was blue with Ozone smoke I got my fix every time I arrived at that station in the 60's. Karl
