Looks like the number plate has been removed too, showing the original number stenciled or painted above the door pocket window.

The two cranes in the background lead me to believe these cars are about to be scrapped. Which explains the missing number boards.

Also the date of the photo would coincide with incoming new R-32's, making these AB's officially retired.
