When I was joy riding the subways for a day in the 1960's, I walked that transfer from the 3 line to the L line. I guess I wasn't afraid of the neighborhood.i came up from Philadelphia and spent the day riding the NY subways. I remember riding the number 8 line, the cars bucked and scared me into thinking we were going to stall. We finally made it to the upper end. |

The cars used on the 3 Av el were actually Steinways which never ran with trailers either on the IRT Queens lines or the IRT mainline. The first time Lo-V trailers were used in Steinway consists was on the 3 Av el. The IRT felt that the Steinways were not powerful enough to operate with trailers through the Steinway tunnel and the TA apparently felt the same way about them even when they were transferred to the mainline. I imagine the TA didn’t care about that when they were transferred to the 3 Av el. |

Well, it's not like they were really going anywhere, and the only way they could jack up the railroad was going to the yard, so what could possibly go wrong? :) |

I remember that jerkoff Charles Barron holding a press conference about how the TA is PURPOSLY discriminating against blacks by making them pay 2 fares at that location. Doesn't Dr. Evil realize that for the first 40 years or so, the neighborhood was Jewish and Italian? Stupid putz!! |

I don't know the area, are the stations physically connected? You're right, up until the 1960s ENY was Jewish and Italian. Many 'paesani' from my grandfather's hometown near Napoli lived in ENY. In fact my parents looked at a buying house on Autumn Avenue back in 1959, but luckily bought elsewhere. Charles Barron is a loudmouth. |

No Livonia & Junius was never a free transfer, they were just two separate stations that happen to be nearby each other. There are many subway stations that were simply nearby each other, some were turned into "free transfers" and some simply were not. In the days before "Unlimited Metro-Cards" - transferring between these very close but un-connected stations required the payment of another fare. For example - plenty of times I've "transferred" between the R-train Metro-Tech/Lawrence Street station in downtown Brooklyn and the nearby Jay Street-Borough Hall station because it was a very quick way to get to work in Brooklyn. The payment of an "extra fare" beat the plenty of "round-about" trips when A & C trains were diverted off the Cranberry Street Tunnel. Plenty of times, before the un-limited Metro-Cards, I've paid the extra fare just to not deal with the hassle of traveling back and around just to get some place. Plenty of other riders will often make such "unlimited Metro-Card" transfers between very close stations to minimize their travel time, or increase their travel options. Over the years and decades, the idea of joining these two stations has been brought up repeatedly in various transit discussion forums, transit articles and reports, and the press. Mike |

It was never a free transfer, but wasn't there some kind of structure with a walkway connecting them, even though an extra fare was required to use it as a transfer? |

But if you can capitalize Latino, you can capitalize Jews as well. I will assume (I hope correctly) it was just an accident that you didn't. |

Yes, there was a walkway alongside the north side of the Livonia el structure connecting the two mezzanines. I remember using it a couple of times in the early 1950's. |

The L-train at that location exists in a railroad right of way, which in the past was an active railroad on a separate set of tracks below the L-train elevated structure. This railroad right of way divides two neighborhoods, but at several points are there pedestrian walkways over the trackage. On the southern side of this walkway are a set of several steps needed to reach the walkway bridge. In this particular instance that walkway allows the public from either side to walk to the other side. Also from the Livonia Avenue station platforms one can easily access this walkway due to the entrance & exit high-wheel turn-styles. The exits also lead riders and the public to the nearest street, and the walkway. Again this walkway is also used by the general public to reach either side of the railroad right of way. At some time in the past, the #3 Junius Avenue station had two entrances with mezzanines - in this case an entrance at both ends of the station. One entrance/exit (the north entrance) was closer to this public walkway - but this entrance/exit mezzanine was closed decades ago with the stairways removed as a part of the MTA"s general closings of entrances & exits - which was done at many stations. The other entrance at "south end" of the station only has two stairways that connect to only one side of the street, the side of the street opposite from where one lands after using the walkway to the L-train station. Of course among transit fans and other folk - over the decades there was always talk about how to join these two stations. Of course in transit policy - money talks - and beyond talk there was little money ever put behind connecting these stations. The Junius Street station was well as the entire #3 line trackage rises over the L-train line at this location, with the #3 Junius Avenue station platforms some distance AWAY from the platforms of the L-train Livonia Avenue platforms. Meaning there is no simple way of connecting these stations. I hope these pictures help explain: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?74081 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?146081 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?132129 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?137347 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?82888 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?133717 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?45819 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?3247 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?140110 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?126572 http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?119408 As one can see from the photos, the walkway is not "wide enough" to separate it into "paid fare" and "open public" zones in some fashion - evem if a short direct walkway could be built to connects to the IRT platforms. The walkway also serves as an important linkage for residents on both sides of the railroad trackage. In any case, I hope this information is helpful. Mike |

Please help me understand what the plans are here. Is this merely a "free out-of-station transfer", as the article states, or is there going to be some construction involved? If it's the former, then why will it take three years? There doesn't seem to be any clear explanation as to exactly what is going to happen. On the other hand, maybe I'm just being obtuse...in any case, I'd be grateful for some info. |

That's my interpretation of the plan two years hence. Maybe I'm wrong.Livonia and Junius |
