The L-train at that location exists in a railroad right of way, which in the past was an active railroad on a separate set of tracks below the L-train elevated structure. This railroad right of way divides two neighborhoods, but at several points are there pedestrian walkways over the trackage. On the southern side of this walkway are a set of several steps needed to reach the walkway bridge.In this particular instance that walkway allows the public from either side to walk to the other side. Also from the Livonia Avenue station platforms one can easily access this walkway due to the entrance & exit high-wheel turn-styles. The exits also lead riders and the public to the nearest street, and the walkway. Again this walkway is also used by the general public to reach either side of the railroad right of way. At some time in the past, the #3 Junius Avenue station had two entrances with mezzanines - in this case an entrance at both ends of the station. One entrance/exit (the north entrance) was closer to this public walkway - but this entrance/exit mezzanine was closed decades ago with the stairways removed as a part of the MTA"s general closings of entrances & exits - which was done at many stations. The other entrance at "south end" of the station only has two stairways that connect to only one side of the street, the side of the street opposite from where one lands after using the walkway to the L-train station. Of course among transit fans and other folk - over the decades there was always talk about how to join these two stations. Of course in transit policy - money talks - and beyond talk there was little money ever put behind connecting these stations. The Junius Street station was well as the entire #3 line trackage rises over the L-train line at this location, with the #3 Junius Avenue station platforms some distance AWAY from the platforms of the L-train Livonia Avenue platforms. Meaning there is no simple way of connecting these stations. The walkway also serves as an important linkage for residents on both sides of the railroad trackage. In any case, I hope this information is helpful. Mike |
