Newest subway line segment in NYC |
|
Posted by Andy on Sat Jul 4 15:38:20 2015 Not counting anything U/C, the answer is the 63d Street Tunnel connector that the F train uses, correct? |

They completely rebuilt Stillwell Ave so that might be the newest, the old tracks had a concrete roadbed, the new station has a EL structure so...Unless you outright new route then its most likely the 63rd connector. |

I mean, yes, it's opened and closed already, but it was open and it was newer, since there was a bit of new tunnel/track. |

As best as I remember, Bloomy asked real estate interests in that area as well as down on 34th to chip in for part of the costs. They refused. Thus it was removed.Hopefully the funding methods will be remembered in a few years when 10th Avenue realizes that they need one, and then bill them for it. |

Unless it was doctored it shows that no shell was built. Intensely stupid.Allegedly, the provision is basically 600 feet or so of level track in case they decide to mine out a station. Otherwise, how do you leave a provision on a built out line that doesn't cost anything? Leaving an incomplete shell would be most of the cost of the station and defeat the purpose of trying to save money. |

No. The "63d Street Tunnel connector" referred to is the connection between 21st St.-Queensbridge station and the Queens Blvd. line. The 63rd St. tunnel itself, including connections to both the 6th Ave. IND and the Broadway BMT on 7th Ave., was opened earlier, with 21st St.-Queensbridge being a stub-end terminal. |

There was an Option in the Tunneling Contract to build a shell for a 10th Avenue Station on the 7 Line, but the Option was not exercised as the City felt it didn't have the money to pay for it. So there is no provision for a future station. However, as mentioned the track in that area is level, so it would be possible to try to do something in the future, but the level of difficulty in the way you would have to go about building such a Station let alone doing it around an operating subway line would probably make it cost and operationally prohibited. |

From a previous message:"But SIR is not part of the “subway” system!" While the above statement is TRUE, as most folks understand the subways. It is also true that there was an effort to connect the B&O Railroad of Staten Island to the BRT's planned Fourth Avenue subway in the circa 1920's. Yes, the plans did not proceed, but if they had I believe various NYC histories would have been different. In any case, my vote for the newest subway line segment is the still under construction and not yet opened extension of the #7 train to the Jacob Javits Center. Mike |

Not enough fire in the belly from all sides to get it done. If the locals wanted it bad enough, somehow the $$$ would have been found. Nobody ever has any money unless something is really wanted. Cynical New Yorker here, me suspects something deeper here as in Bloomburg having a hard on for someone in the area of 10th Ave. Some landlord, some businessman, someone of that ilk that pissed off Big Mike as the real reason that the station was not built.. Big Mike had a reputation of getting what he wanted. If he wanted a 10th Ave Station bad enough, it would have been built..straight answer. |
