BMT Standard 2204 - Was: VIDEO: BMT STANDARDS MOVED to 207th Street Yard! |

Also, can anyone provide some technical information about 2204 and its status? I know one of its trucks is from an R9. Is this the motor or trailer truck? Can it be pulled as a trailer? |

I’ve seen all sorts of things in my time with the TA. 207 Yd used to have a 51 ft “adapter.” It was actually a World’s Fair Steinway with absolutely no electrical or mechanical components under the car. One end of it had an H drawhead and the other end had a J (IRT Lo-V) drawhead. Whenever it was necessary to either tow or push Lo-Vs into the barn, a crew on either a SMEE or an R-9 would couple to the H end of the car, pull it out of the spur track where it was stored and couple the J end of it to the Lo-Vs that were to be pushed into the barn both ends iron only of course. Totally illegal naturally, but supervision sort of looked the other way when it was in use. By the way, I understand that when the Hi-V was operable, Branford would couple it to the Lo-V iron and air only and the Lo-V would pull in one direction and the Hi-V would pull in the other. |

BMT steels had maximum traction trucks with one motor per truck instead of the usual motor truck with 2 motors and a trailer truck so it should be interesting to see how that car would operate with a “foreign” truck. |

They'd mark the floor edges with which kind of coupler was on each end, "VD," "MCB" and there was another type I forget as well. "Compact cobbage" like they have these days to mate cars wasn't a thing back then. You'd use an entire trailer car as cobbage back then. :) |

Without the correct truck, I doubt 2204 will do much travel.I wonder if Branford has a spare frame and motor handy? Perhaps then the shop can assemble a rebuilt truck. This is assuming of course someone was willing to pay for the transport of said items... -Stef |

I am pasting in part of an email sent to me by Henry Raudenbusch, a couple of years back with info. on the AB's door control:"The BMT A-type 67 ft cars originally had all doors operated by air, but controlled only within the car. You may remember the button panel between the two center doors! Around 1924, for the same reason as the IRT, the BMT also retrofitted trainlined door control. Those cars had been built with fully automatic couplers (WABCO H-2-A), with an electric portion (AL-18). That only had 18 circuits, not enough to provide for door control, so they had to add a 9-point jumper below the coupler. To minimize the handling of jumpers, most of these cars were then combined into 3-car B-type units. The button panel in the middle of the middle car controlled all doors in the train. The panels in the two end cars of the unit were deactivated and painted over." |

For those of you who may not be familiar, the BMT utilized a unique “hammer head” brake handle that was designed for the specific purpose of hammering in difficult door jumpers. They remained in use on the BMT until the Chrystie St merger when The number of BMT steels was diminishing and the hammer heads would no longer be needed. Interestingly, the old “Transit Transit” TV show presented a safety film originally produced by the BRT describing the Trip device and the deadman’s button on the steels in which the brake handle was an open top rather than a hammer head. I suspect that means that prior to the use of the door jumpers on the steels, there was no need to have a dual use brake handle but at some point the BMT felt the need to develop one. AFAIK, no other RR property in the US that utilized similar brake valves ever had hammerhead handles. |

All the D type trucks had motors. The “pilot” trucks were merely those which were at the ends of the unit as opposed to the ones under the articulations. There were no trailer trucks on the steels at all. All trucks the steels had one motor each with the exception of the 4000 series trailers in the BX units which, being trailers, had no motors at all. |

Meanwhile they have 4 cars in Fern Rock that were restored and they did nothing with them.My understanding is they'd like to dispose of them but the City won't have it. |
