For those of you who may not be familiar, the BMT utilized a unique “hammer head” brake handle that was designed for the specific purpose of hammering in difficult door jumpers. They remained in use on the BMT until the Chrystie St merger when The number of BMT steels was diminishing and the hammer heads would no longer be needed. Interestingly, the old “Transit Transit” TV show presented a safety film originally produced by the BRT describing the Trip device and the deadman’s button on the steels in which the brake handle was an open top rather than a hammer head. I suspect that means that prior to the use of the door jumpers on the steels, there was no need to have a dual use brake handle but at some point the BMT felt the need to develop one. AFAIK, no other RR property in the US that utilized similar brake valves ever had hammerhead handles.
