I was wondering about that since the BMT “slide” and the R-9 electric portions are entirely different. The D types have electric portions like the R-9s.

How did the C/Rs work the standards? They closed the doors of the rest of the train, and then stepped inside and closed the door on their car?

Its not a lot of people, and a lot of cars. It's hard to dedicate enough attention to the restoration of all cars at once.

But yes, it's been 25 years since these ran. Quite a long time.

Apparently they came up with a spare arnine box and draw mechanism for at least one end there. They were fully coupled up.

I came in after the last ones had left service. The door controls were inside and I suppose they closed up everything else except for the doors where they were and then closed those up last. Fortunately we still have a few folks here who worked them, so I'm sure they'll fill in the details beyond that.

Right. The door controls were on the door pillar of the center set of doors - you'll notice that it's wider than the door pillars for the end doors.

Aa built, there was a crew member on each car, and buttons to open and close the side doors, as well as the storm doors.

After they were reconfigured for MUDC, the controls at the conductor's working position had buttons to close the doors towards the right and left - both the end door of that car, and the rest of the section controlled from that position - and a separate button to close the center pair of doors.

There's a story, legend or not, of a conductor being pushed out of a train by a passenger realizing it was his stop at the last minute, as the center doors were closing. The motorman got indication, and arrived at the next station with no one to open the doors.

One end of the D Type from the museum had its electric portion rewired to match the IND R9 so that when coupled, both cars are able to operate MU.

In the B type move to 207th, it was just iron, with no air for a dead car pull by R9 horses.

Interesting. I heard that they had a full hookup on that run there. Heard the compressors running on the AB's as well, so kinda pointless doing no air if the cylinders weren't being used. Arnines do like to keep compressors running. :)

2392 was the only car that had power. No train line air between the BRT cars and the horses. The three car B Type unit was dragged the entire way north via the Manhattan Bridge.

Thanks! Having worked arnines back in the 70's, they had their own issues at times making it up and over the bridge. That must have been a slow ride to the top. :)

I am trusting that you work there, the information I heard was that they did have a proper coupler and air on one end of the AB's and were able to supply air through the tappets. Ah well ...

I'm surprised they didn't get that down at CIY, but I['m sure 207 can take care of that. Still amazing seeing them off the saw horses and on the rails again. They were in there against that wall for so long, I thought they'd become part of the structure in there. :)

Heh. That end of the system has ALWAYS been full of drama, I worked for the teeyay in 1970 and '71, moved up to motors, and saw it all. I *do* understand and revel in all that Bill and the others have managed to pull off against difficult odds. I guess like the arnines, some serious re-piping is still needed then, and that was no small task at all.

Still, amazing to see them rolling at all!

I'd love to ride those again. I rode them on the Brighton local, sea beach express, the franklin shuttle and last on the Canarsie line when I went to Stuy. It would also be cool to ride the triplexes too. Those were gone Long before the standards.

Dunno if you know what bad shape they were in, but they had frame and body cancer up the wazoo. Everyone down there was afraid they'd collapse into dust which is why seeing them on the rails at all is nothing short of amazing. Thus, I was under the impression that over all those years things had finally started to come together enough that some of that major undercar had gotten done somehow.

The last Triplexes were (prematurely) pulled in July of 1965. Ironically, their last day of service, July 23, was the very same day we left the city for home while on vacation. And while we rode exclusively on the BMT Southern Division (a couple of shiny new R-32 Nortons, a TT, a QT or double Ralph), I didn't see a single Triplex. The BMT standards lasted until August 4, 1969, the last run being on the Moe.

That's about how it worked. They would close down the rear section first, then the front section. After a quick look, they'd close the remaining pair of doors at their work station. It's funny - even though I rode on the BMT standards for two years every Saturday, not once did I ever ride in the same car as the conductor. I never saw the conductor do his stuff.

The 6000s are closer to IRT specs. They, along with the Electroliners, have curved sides to clear CTA L platforms.

The end doors were also capable of being opened and closed from the same panel, left and right from the conducton's position.

I understand, but there are lots of R-1/9s and Lo-Vs and they got the BUs running, but two key BMT types were on the back burner for decades. I certainly don't fault the dedicated people who work on the cars, but someone decided to sideline thoe cars.

I rode them to Stuy as well. Of course it was a shock to see Arnines in their place in the fall of 1969 (the same year the Myrtle El closed) on the Lousy Local as we called it. I remember riding the museum set (2390-1-2) on the LL as it was in regular service long after most of the early Standards were retired and scrapped.
