NATIONAL Ripple Effects of Shutdown

This was about the NATIONAL races, NOT New York State.

Where this affects those is now Wall Street will target candidates in states where either they are vulnerable OR the Democratic incumbent (in areas with such) is vulnerable in ways they likely were not thinking of before this happened.

There are many of us Democrats who have seen how backwards many GOPers (especially those aligned with the Tea Party) are. Internet searches will make it very easy to see how some still want to think it's the 1950's and seem not to want to understand how different our society is now while others are all about greed to the point where they don't care who gets hurt. That is why something like what Cuomo did could have big-time blowback nationally even if we don't see it immediately.

That's why I said what I did about the Democratic Party telling Cuomo NOT to shut down the subways again. This is likely WAY over the heads of many, but those who religiously follow politics (WAY more than I do) are much more likely to understand where I am coming from on this.

On the morning of December 25, 2010, I was in a hotel breakfast room watching one of the network morning shows on an Albany station. (I don't remember which one)

The local weather was most certainly live. The meteorologist explained that the computer models had been off but that the models were now converging to show a very severe storm south of Albany down to NYC.

I decided that rather than spending an extra day with my relatives I would leave early on the morning of December 26 to drive home to Queens.

So I had 24 hours notice from a TV weather forecast. I got home to Jamaica just as the snow was starting to stick.

That's interesting, because in Philly I know for a fact that was not the case because Glenn Schwartz on NBC10 there came in and did special webcasts and those were the only weather updates before 11:00 PM that people had there. None of the stations in Philly that day did local news EXCEPT for 11:00 PM.

Lets see:

It looks like for one Wall Street DOESN'T have to sue. They have other ways they can get back at Cuomo that they can do legally and potentially make like miserable for the Dems, mainly funding Republican candidates beyond what they would have otherwise (especially with candidates in tight races well outside New York) in an attempt the Dems don't get control of the House and Senate back in 2016.

In case you forgot, the blowback from that shutdown was huge as Cuomo violated Rule #1 of politics by PO'ing Wall Street (David Faber would not have blasted Cuomo repeatedly like he did on CNBC unless Wall Street felt that way as he has a ton of credibility there for being accurate). A couple of days after that storm, we suddenly have the MTA "exploring" keeping the underground portion open during storms after they and Cuomo got slammed.

The latter suggests Democratic Party leaders likely made it clear to Cuomo that priority #1 for 2016 (besides retaining the White House) is to get back control of the House and Senate and his shutting down the subways during that storm may have the effect of severely hurting their chances in races outside New York if the so-called "self-centered wealthy" fund Republican candidates they would not have otherwise just to get back at Cuomo. With the Dems already facing an onslaught from wealthy Republican donors (including the Koch Brothers pledging to use up to $1 BILLION of their own money to fund candidates), something like that shutdown makes it that much more difficult if the "self-centered wealthy" on Wall Street try to extract revenge on Cuomo for shutting down the system and preventing employees who had to be home with their families and not stay in a hotel from getting to work by adding to the money already pledged to fund Republican candidates.

The DNC in my view likely made it clear to Cuomo never to do that again or face being "persona non grata" in the Democratic Party if they do not win back the House and/or Senate in 2016, especially by a narrow margin and even more if it were proven that shutdown proved to be the difference. If that happened, I would suspect the DNC would then heavily fund their own candidate to beat Cuomo in 2018 if Cuomo runs again.

The Dems have learned from 2000 and '04 not to overlook stuff like that. If Cuomo indeed got a verbal talk-to over that shutdown, that is why.

As said a while back, in my opinion, I suspect "Prince Andrew" wound up having a private meeting with "Queen Debbie" (Democratic Party Chairperson Deborah Wasserman Schultz) where "Queen Debbie" told "Prince Andrew" never to shut the system down again unless it were an Irene/Sandy situation where such IS IN FACT warranted. That would explain why the MTA, after they and Cuomo got massive blowback from shutting down the system like they did said they would "explore" keeping the underground portions open.

You make two presumptions for which you cite no evidence.

1. The chair of the DNC has tried to influence Cuomo, on this issue, or on any other issue.

2. The governor of one of the two states producing the largest Democratic margins in national elections will change his stance based solely on advice from the chair of the DNC.

I think if Obama asked him to do something he might give it a minute's thought. Anyone else, 2 millseconds.

Exactly:

The DNC knows all too well what the unintended consequences of what Cuomo did are. He may be the Governor, but if Cuomo wants to run for President or more importantly stay as Governor past 2018, he has to "play nice" with Democratic Party leaders who could make his life miserable.

Especially if the Dems don't get control of the House and Senate back in 2016, and even more so if it turns out Wall Street funded some candidates they never would have otherwise who won because of what Cuomo did in January, they would likely turn around and heavily fund their own candidate against Cuomo.

As said, the DNC learned from 2000 and '04 that seemingly relatively minor things like shutting down a subway system in a snowstorm can have major consequences if it PO's the wrong people.

There are still a lot of people who work on Wall Street (as we saw with Sandy) and the "self-centered wealthy" were extremely PO'ed about what Cuomo did (David Faber would never have repeatedly blasted Cuomo on CNBC if Wall Street didn't feel that way, he has too much credibility with Wall Street to go on like that to do it if they didn't). In fact, if Sandy had turned out to be a bust like that snowstorm, I suspect those "self-centered wealthy" would have funded their own candidate to beat Cuomo and we might very well have had someone else as Governor when that storm hit two months ago.

That's why if Cuomo got a talk to from the DNC, it's because the DNC knows all too well the unintended consequences that could still come out from what Cuomo did we might not see until late next year (as some of the "self-centered wealthy" now try to get even with Cuomo by funding Republican candidates in states well outside New York in order for the Republicans to keep control of the House and Senate past 2016). The Democratic Party learned the hard way in 2000 and '04 you don't let even the smallest thing like what Cuomo did with that subway shutdown happen because it can come back to haunt the Dems in ways most people would not realize.

While I agree with your point and others who have made similar points, I am simply wondering a much more basic question.

Just why is this topic even coming up again?

Most folks have simply forgotten about the subway closure, and whatever impact it had was felt and dealt with a long time ago. Most folks these days are looking forward to the coming spring, and the soon to be summer months. Most folks these days when they think about transit will concern themselves with the newest rise in the transit fare.

I do not understand just why this topic is an issue now!

To keep harping on a dead subject that was discussed, debated and closed weeks ago - boggles the rational mind! Why are we still talking about this? There has to be better topics or subjects of transit lore, history, politics, operations, etc. to discuss!

If we're going to bring up long dead resolved postings, why talk about the following:

- The usual rant to revive the Brown M-train - that's good for a days discussion.
- The usual rant about the slow, ultra slow completion of the #7 to its new 34th Street terminal.
- The usual rantings about building a new Penn Station without spending a dime to do so.
- The usual rant and predictions about in what century the fully completed Second Avenue subway will open, and which of our grand-children will be there to actually ride it.
- The usual rant about connecting or not connecting Staten Island to the rest of the subway system.
- The usual rant about building additional rail tunnels to/from New Jersey.
- The usual rant about the new home of the Transit Museum, not that there's any money to do so, or that's there's a better location, etc.
- The usual rant about reviving long closed railroad lines and providing service on those lines.
- The usual rant about which subway system was better - IRT or IND! This was always good for a few weeks of arguing, name-calling & spirited debate.
- The usual rant about Robert Moses! There has to be a long dead topic around that we can revive, to revive the spirit of Rober Moses!
- The usual rant about the World Trade Center! There's usually loads of stuff to talk about, argue about or rave about!

I know that this is a short list! I'm sure that I missed a few of the usual "brought up from the dead and revived" rant type topics!

Yes, I am being sarcastic! However the basic question remains.

Just why is this topic even coming up again?

Mike

Not enough people on "Wall Street" to even justify a separate Whitehall Street service down Broadway, or a Nassau Street service from South Brooklyn. The #1 train has seats available in the rush.

I-T has gone to India. That is what runs the place, not the stuffed shirts still commuting there, and they can telecommute whenever they want.

CNBC is a business news junk channel, or they'd throw that stupid, hysterical Rick Santelli loudmouth right out on his ass.

Wow, that was a long post just to ask a very simple question!

The answer to your question is that I replied to this existing thread because Wallyhorse had not answered my question.

Cuomo may not care about the Democratic Party, but if the Dems don't get control of the House and Senate in 2016 and it's because Wall Street-funded Republican candidates proved to be the difference, Cuomo is likely looking at a heavily-funded candidate to run against him that the DNC endorses come 2018 as he will be blamed because people on Wall Street have very long memories and it's the one way the "self-centered wealthy" can get back at Cuomo for shutting down the subways and in their mind costing them millions and their companies potentially clients (who are often self-centered and have in some cases unrealistic expectations, something I have dealt with at times up close and personal).

Wall Street has no more vision that Friday's close, therefore no memory either.

Shutting down the subways for these stuffed shirts was no more serious than having a bad day such as when their Mercedes can't start. Life went on.

No you don't. Cuomo was trying to protect people and the system from what was supposed to be a historic blizzard. If we had the winter Boston did, quite a few people would be singing a different tune.

With all due respect, your opinion is foolish on its face. I do no see a political hack such as Ms. Shultz lecturing a popular elected governor over a matter of policy mor do I see the governor standing for being lectured by her.

Except the Democratic Party has to worry about blowback in the form of it being an obstacle towards regaining the House and Senate in 2016 because of some "self-centered wealthy" deciding to fund Republican candidates they otherwise would not have solely because of what Cuomo did. Especially with the Koch Brothers putting up $1 Billion of their own money on Republican candidates this election cycle, what Cuomo did can hurt when you are already dealing with something like that.
