What happened to Astoria line last night?

Does anyone knw what happened to the Astoria line yesterday afternoon. My friend recounted this story to me how her usual 30 minute subway ride took her one hour and 45 minutes from 57 St-7th Avenue.

She was waiting there for the N or Q when she hears an announcement that Manhattan bound trains are not running due to a sick passenger at 30th Avenue in Astoria. That doesn't pertain to her trip so we waits 15 minutes without a train.

Then there is another announcement that due to the sick passenger, Astoria bound passengers should take a southbound train to Times Square, then board the Number 7 to Queensboro Plaza for the N and Q. So now she is thoroughly puzzled why a sick passenger on a southbound train in Astoria woud affect northbound service and if there are no Ns or Qs from 57 Street, why would trains be running at Queensboro Plaza?

Not trusting the MTA, she instead boards a northbound R to Steiway Street to board the bus which shoud operate on 20 minute headways. She gets off the R and checks BusTime. It shows all six buses on the route running southbound. She regrets not getting a screenshot.

Figuring BusTime can't be correct, she waits for the bus, because she has no alternative other than a cab. I don't know how long we waited, but it could have been up to an hour. Finally a bus arrives with te next bus please sign followed by all the other five buses on the line.

Remember, this is an ordinary day, no cold weather plan and no scheduled track work.

I asked her to write to the MTA for an explanation.

Not trusting the MTA was her first mistake. We don't make station announcements just to mess around.

So what do you think was happening? Were they running shuttle service between Queensboro Plaza and Astoria?

When an announcement is not clear and appears wrong, it is only natural not to trust it.

Look at all the people who trusted the MTA by taking the 7 to Queensboro Plaza the day of the umbrella incident, only to be stuck there for three hours waiting for shuttle buses.

It's not as if the MTA has a great record regarding giving out correct information. Just look at Wakefield's blog.

57th St. to Astoria does not usually take 30 minutes. That's the time it takes from Canal to Ditmars unless there's some kind of trouble.

Two things. First, N and Q trains are really only running express from Astoria Blvd not Ditmars since Astoria Blvd is an express stop. Second, if S/B trains can operate vis the exp tk between Ditmars and Qnsbro Plz, why should any Ns or Qs have to terminate at 57 St if there is a clear track for S/B service to operate?

Why not cross post his response on this board?

Thanks.

There were no announcements when the next northbound train would arrive. As I stated passengers were instructed not to wait for it, but to travel back to Times Square and to take the #7. So there probably was no northbound service to Astoria for a considerable period of time.

I was at Times Square at the time and there was a Q on the NB express track that was announcing it was going back to Brooklyn, this at about 5:45 or 5:50. I crossed over to take that train, but it sat for a good 10 minutes before they actually left, so that further messed things up. In the meantime the announcements were being made that Astoria service had resumed with delays, except that I was on the only train that should have been going up that way.

It was nice to be on a totally empty train, until we got to 34th. I was actually waiting for the train that originates at 57th at 5:55. I'll take that one if the timing works but I don't go out of my way for it. That trains is also usually empty. When they started running the Q to Astoria it messed up the southbound commute in the evening. The train is always crowded and frequently delayed. When they all came from 57th you could set your watch to it and always get a seat.

I spoke to my friend, and below are her comments regarding the service announcements in bold posted by Kevin from Midwood

Service Change Posted: 02/23/2015 5:51PM

Due to a sick customer at 30 Av, the following service changes are in effect:

Some northbound [N] and [Q] trains terminate at 57 St-7 Av.

Service Change Posted: 02/23/2015 5:32PM

Incomplete and semi factual

Due to a sick customer at 30 Av, some northbound [N] and [Q] trains terminate at 57 St-7 Av.

Nowhere does this announcement indicate the complete set of instructions that the MTA issued to passengers about going to 42nd St and taking the 7. During this announcement no N or Q trains were running past 57th St. indicating a serious problem.

Southbound [N] and [Q] trains are running express from Astoria-Ditmars Blvd to Queensboro Plaza.

The actual announcement was there was no Northbound Q. Southbound service into Brooklyn delayed due to a sick passenger, so take the R train.

Allow additional travel time. - never stated out loud

Delays Posted: 02/23/2015 6:04PM

Following an earlier incident at 30 Av, [N] and [Q] train service has resumed with residual delays.

I was there about 20 minutes and decided to go with the R, so I couldn't say if this were true or not.

Customer in need of medical assistance, and for some reason, trains could not be routed down the middle track. Still, she would have fared better waiting for an N/Q, I'll have to double check, but the gap in service was no greater than 20 minutes.

There was probably a gap train at Hoyt middle. A N train was rerouted to CTL. It was like the early 80s all over again......

Then why was everyone directed not to wait for the N or Q and take a southbound train to Times Square and get the N there?

That seems more than a ten minute reroute. Any way you look at it, the MTA screwed up by giving out wrong info. Waiting for the N or Q would have been better, bit how would a passenger have known that?

It was a fluid situation. Maybe the thought was that they were going to try to set up limited service between QBP and Astoria. I don't work in RTO, so I don't know what the thought process was, or how the event played out exactly, but it's easy for you to say "wrong information was given" now that you have the benefit of hindsight. Still, if your friend had followed the directions given, she probably would've been home a lot sooner.

I said "wrong information" because most likely if she had waited for a train she probably would have gotten home quicker than traveling back to Times Square. That is assuming she would have been able to board the first train.

Also, we don't know when northbound service resumed from Queensboro Plaza.

I think she made the most rational decision. It was just unfortunate that there also was a separate 1 hour delay on the Q101 which she didn't expect which caused her to arrive home much later than if she followed the MTA's directions.

But why should she have trusted them taht trains would be available at Queensboro Plaza after passengers were directed there the day of the umbrella incident only to be stuck waiting three hours for shuttle buses?
