The LIRR offered the City the Whitestone line ROW before abandonment. They did not offer it at the time of the Dual Contracts or the extension to Flushing. They only offered it after they could not compete. They went to the trouble of electrifying it and offering direct Penn Sta service. It did not help. It was a very short line that served very few customers and very little room for expansion. The entire Port Washington Branch would have been worth grabbing. The LIRR wasn't offering that. |

LIRR was begrudgingly willing to have the Flushing Line extension along the ROW to Bayside, and we see the evidence of that in the cut thru Murray Hill, but they really were not much interested in negotiating. |

Yet somehow Woodhaven Blvd is still a traffic disaster, the buses that operate that corridor are at capacity (even after a restructuring that allowed the Q53 to relieve pressure off the locals). The demand is clearly there. The city and its needs have changed from "geographic and historic" realities/patterns or whatever you want to call them. Try eliminating the G and see what that does to congestion in the Bed-Stuy/Williamsburg/Greenpoint areas when everyone either has to drive or take the bus. |

The idea of using RBB as an XBL is interesting...Question about QB express ridership though: What percentage of QB express ridership is boarding at Roosevelt (be it from preceding local stations or from the Woodhaven Blvd buses)? The thought here is that if it's a significant amount, then curtail QB express service by that amount south of Roosevelt and redirect it down the RBB. Even if it worked from a ridership POV, operationally it sucks because RBB trains would have to cross in front of QB locals to reach the express tracks :( |

I was simply commenting on the idea of rebuilding the area of the bellmouths so that the RBB could reach the express tracks without crossing the local tracks. I agree that it should just simply be an extension of a QB local to Rockaway Park. If there ends up being a need for a super express (which I think we will see) then that's another project, but it won't happen until the need proven. |

From another message:"I was simply commenting on the idea of rebuilding the area of the bellmouths so that the RBB could reach the express tracks without crossing the local tracks. I agree that it should just simply be an extension of a QB local to Rockaway Park. If there ends up being a need for a super express (which I think we will see) then that's another project, but it won't happen until the need proven." On the upper level of the #2, #3, #4 & #5 trains railroad north of the Franklin Avenue station in Brooklyn, currently #2 trains bound for Flatbush Avenue take the track switch that veers off of the local track. The #5 trains bound for Flatbush Avenue have to cross from the express track to the local, and then use the same track switch as the above noted #2 train to the trek to Flatbush Avenue. What is interesting is the wish to not create another situation like the one described above, while noting that rebuilding the track complex is gonna be a really tough project upon a very heavily traveled train pathway. Some things are really so much easier during the pre-building phase of a subway line and its extensions. Imagine a middle track diverging route setup (like south 59th Street/CC) for the proposed RBB extension, plus all of the other diverging route/track setups for the Queens Blvd. That would make for a pretty complicated train pathway for the whole line. I was talking about PERCEPTION, which sometimes trumps reality in the eyes of some.Anyway, as I would now do it (and this would actually be my preferred way anyhow): A revived (V) train runs 2nd Avenue-Rockaway Park at all times (eliminating the Rockaway Park shuttle entirely). The (M) and (R) are both extended to 179th Street at least during peak hours and at other times as warranted to avoid a conga line that can delay this new (V) otherwise. This actually could be 24/7 if warranted with the (E) and (F) if so express in Queens on their full routes at all times. |
