California has a "build in California" rule. Looks like Kinki is about the lose the contract.

I think not. The specific issue is the construction of a new factory building. If Kinki elects to build in another county the issue may be moot. Those interested in a bit more details should see the LA Times website.

greed/fear of future deprivation are some of the deepest human behavior drivers. Union or management, the only difference is the names of the idiots. And, one might remember that the 8hr day/40 hr week, paid sick leave, paid vacation are all courtesy of union activity. So, sadly, are also "firemen" on diesel engines, "full crew laws" mandating overstaffing of freight trains in years past, the "second car driver" on the MBTA Green lines and other such abuses.
And, as a reminder, when GM partnered w/Toyota in the Fremont assembly plant in CA, UAW represented workers produced Toyotas and various GM relabels at the same or better efficiency/quality levels as any other Toyota plant in the US.
Best of all, the plant continued to generate carloadings for the serving RR.

CA, just as NY has the build it here mandate--why Kawasaki is in Tarrytown, M-K (RIP) leased a factory space in P'burg (no h) CA, and Breda was dangling the "we'll build a local plant" agit prop trying to get another order from LAMTA. Happily, they were smart enough to choose a better builder. Anyone remember how long it took Breda to make their stuff work on the T while the Kinkis there soldiered on?

So, yes, they ARE building the current order in leased space, and, yes, they are threatening to go elsewhere for the "permanent plant". But, as w/NY, PA, MA, who all insist on in state assembly, if Kinki goes outside CA they will still have to do a certain $$ % of any future contract in state, and likely within the service area of the purchasing transit authority. M-K got the BART C-2 contract by leasing a final assembly plant in Contra Costa County. LAMTA will be a customer for subway cars for both the Purple extension and at some point replacing current Red/Purple stock. "Market driven behavior"?

So I read the LA Times piece.

The key is in the headline: Union demands driving railcar jobs out of California, Japanese firm says.

"Japanese Firm Says."

That's their take on it, as you would expect. It seems there were severe environmental issues with the project, which the union highlighted. So whose fault is it?

Think about it. Considering the plenitude of "news" sources available in this age of internets...there is really not that great a difference between any provider.

On the contrary— there's a wide range of different outlets. Fox offers nothing but extremist propaganda; CNN strives for "balance" between truth and lies, MSNBC offers occasional news with right-wing propaganda mixed in, while some sites (like Crooks & Liars, Firedoglake, maybe Raw Story) offer actual news with no bias at all.

I've posted this before...

Here's a quick guide to the media in the US.

A bunch of senators get together for a Capitol Hill baseball game, with teams divided by party lines (ie, the Democrats play ball against the Republicans).

The Democrats win the game 20-0.

After the game:

The conservative Fox News will report that the Republicans won 20-0.
The centrist CNN will report that the game was tied 10-10.
The liberal MSNBC will report that the Democrats won 20-19.

Seems slightly elitist to put down fox.

"Elitist?"

The union didn't file a lawsuit against the city council to stop issuing the permit, proving their environmental issue charge is just a ruse.

California follows a protocol of analysis and public disclosure of environmental impacts of proposed projects and adopts all feasible measures to mitigate those impacts. The California Environmental Quality Act makes environmental protection a mandatory part of every California state and local agency's decision making process.

Palmdale was relying on an environmental report done years earlier for an office park. It would have been easy for the union to file a lawsuit alleging that this report was inadequate given the difference between an office park and the proposed use, but they didn't. Why not? Because the IBEW had been trying to strongarm Kinki into agreeing to a card check agreement regarding the unionizing of the workforce. It could care less about the environmental issues.

The Union is full of sour grapes because the jobs are not union, they cannot claim that, so they claim that it is environmental.

Smoking a cigarette is an environmental issue, but they do not bitch about that.

We will be happy to host the Japanese firm here in North Dakota, which is a right to work state. But of course we do not have enough workers for the jobs we need to fill. We are at full employment and are importing workers from where ever we can get them. Walmart starts at $15/hr with full benefits.

Skrue the onions, they are past their prime and quite rotted.

Apparently Dave has no concept as to how union negotiations work. Once that site proposal was stopped, that would have been the end of it for both sides. Well ... I'm out of this thread too.

LOL! Dewd, I'm a former Machinist and my wife was both a staff attorney and later a supervisory attorney at the NLRB. I've forgotten more about union negotiations than you'll ever know!

Wow ... physician, jet pilot, union leader, financial analyst. Not many have as varied a career path over their lives as I do. Congrats!

Never said I was a physician but my brother is a surgeon so maybe that confused you. And yup, while in college I worked for a while assisting an IAM business agent so I've been involved in several labor-management meetings. I've also done tax analysis of union proposals for management, so I've read quite a few union proposals/management responses before.

What a long, strange trip it's been....*VBG*

i will explain this ONCE to you, since the notion of extrapolating logic from context seems to be beyond your ken (based on your previous post).

1. if you respond to a comment i post on this board agreeing, refuting or enhancing the comment, i will either agree with, refute or enhance your response.

2. if you make an irrelevant derogatory comment toward me i will respond with the two-worded epithet i have been using.

your usage of it just now shows you didn't properly understand my usage of it, hence this lesson. in addition, i will not engage in endless looping of the epithet. once is enough, r.e: my response to the offending comment. continuing to use it beyond the initial response is simply unjustifiable semantics.

Oh, and not a jet pilot. Turboprop, not jet.
