My dream light rail/streecar system for the Phoenix Metro Area

While a subway system will never happen in the Phoenix area, in the future we may see some expansion of the light rail and streetcar system. So, I came up with an idea for a future system of light rail lines, each with their own color. Here is what I got:
  • Red Line - Existing route plus north/west extension to Metrocenter Mall and east extension to Superstition Springs Center.
  • Blue Line - Existing route (including Downtown Mesa extension) plus planned Capitol/I-10 West extension.
  • Green Line - The planned Tempe Streetcar.
  • Silver Line - Baseline and Central Avenue up Central to Indian School Road, east on Indian School Road, north on SR 51, east on Peoria Avenue, and north on 56th Street to Paradise Valley Mall.
  • Orange Line - From Arrowhead Towne Center, south on 67th Avenue, east on Northern Avenue, south on Central Avenue, east on Loop 202, south to Sky Harbor Airport, east on Broadway, south on McClintock, and east on Chandler Blvd to Chandler Fashion Center.
  • Pink Line - Chandler Blvd and 48th Street, east on Chandler Blvd/Williams Field Road to Power Road, and north on Power Road to Superstition Springs Center.
  • Brown Line - Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright south to Chandler Blvd, and east on Chandler Blvd to Chandler Fashion Center.
  • Purple Line - 75th Avenue and Baseline to Power Road via Baseline, and north on Power Road to Superstition Springs Center.
  • Gold Line - Downtown Phoenix from US Airways Center/Chase Field, east via existing alignment, south on Dobson Road, east on Southern Avenue, and south on Gilbert Road to Queen Creek Road.

For efficient use of rail equipment, at Chandler Fashion Center Orange Line trains would leave as the Brown Line and vice-versa. Similarly, at Superstition Springs Center Pink Line trains would leave as the Purple Line and vice-versa.

How are these ideas for light rail or streetcar lines? I know it seems like a lot, but this is just a dream.

I recently rethought some of these routes and their destinations, and perhaps as an enhancement, I would extend the Blue Line to go further west and north on Loop 101 to serve Westgate.

In a metro area as spread out, geologically stable, and parched as Phoenix I would think it somewhat foolish to pursue surface light rail when heavy rail subways (or at least grade separated LRT) could likely be bored for prices that approach the lowest costs in the developed world. Surface LRT, even with private right of ways and dedicated lanes, simply seems too slow to provide effective transit in so extensive an area as the Phoenix Metro area. Go with ZPTO trains running at high frequency and up zone the communities adjacent to the new line. It may even be able to finance some fraction of the system through tax increment financing based on the up zoning.

Why a heavy rail subway system, when light rail would be much less expensive? Even some cities that already have heavy rail systems (such as Atlanta) are considering service expansion with light rail.

FWIW, if you can get costs near what Vancouver pays for SkyTrain, it starts to scream, "go ZPTO". Phoenix isn't the kind of place with lots of old railroad and interurban ROW that can be reused*, and unless you're going with considerable grade separation, you're going to end up with a system that's a bit hamstrung, especially as the light rail network ends up going rather far out on arterials to serve far flung suburbs. In contrast, with a ZPTO system, you'll get much higher average speeds, and can ramp up service for peak times or special events without worrying about employee scheduling or overtime.

*One could argue that if you're in a place where you can complement your light rail network with a good regional service, then it works. If your plan is to just run 35 mph MAX light rail cars into a deep suburb, then you may really want to reconsider that plan.

Paid for by whom? Channeling by inner Bill of Maspeth. A better solution would be a Commuter Rail system to lure people from, Grand Ave. corridor, I-10 and The Loop 101 and the East Valley. The tracks are basically in place now.

IMHO The Light rail is a waste. It`s slow and mainly serves those headed to Downtown Phoenix and ASU. Every year we are tasked by my employer to take a stupid Maricopa County Transportation survey, with no results or action :-(

The light rail is not a waste, as the ridership speaks for itself. Note that the extension to the Downtown Mesa Mormon Temple should be completed by late next year, and the first phase of the Northwest extension should be complete in 2016.

Note that there is a slight error in the Silver Line route. Instead of east on Peoria, it should read east on Shea. In addition, it would go north on Tatum, not on 56th Street.

Also, I came up with an alternate version of the Orange Line route. Instead of using 67th Avenue and Northern, it would use Glendale Ave and 59th Avenue to better serve Downtown Glendale and Glendale Community College.

Still a waste IMO . It does not go where people live in its` present routing. Remember LRT was supposed to develop surrounding areas around the alignment? Have you been between 44th St. and 7th St.?

If it wasn`t for the different ASU campuses(and Community Colleges along the route), the ridership numbers would be quite different. Check the numbers when ASU is not in session. Also with the increase in parking fees in downtown Phoenix, it will not send folks to the events down there by LRT, but to the Casinos. More and more top acts are there compared to downtown.

Some folks I know from the Eastern suburbs have tried it as a novelty, but have stated they won`t use it again. I realize I may sound selfish, but it doesn`t meet my needs. Not one single bit. I would have been better served with commuter rail as the tracks are very near my residence.

I will admit that the eventual extention to Superstition Springs is a positive thing(I can`t comment on the West as I don`t reside over there) I still maintain the LRT does not go where most folks reside.

Because the increase in speed for grade separated transit (not necessarily heavy rail, although ZPTO would be a big plus) is so much greater. So long as the capital costs are kept in check and it doesn't go all SAS on us, then it doesn't have to go tremendously fast to provide a much better value for money. There is so much room for improvement for rapid transit construction costs that Phoenix would be an ideal place to try to build a low cost grade separated rapid transit line. IMHO going to something like the single bore tunnels used for Barcelona's Line 9/10 could go a long way toward reducing capital cost:

Also, for those who were wondering about the choice of my colors, most of them are rather random, however, with the Brown Line I tried to avoid majority Hispanic areas (the Asian-American residents of Atlanta had an issue with MARTA's Yellow Line which is why it was renamed the Gold Line).

While the Phoenix area doesn't really have any true gay neighborhoods, I routed the Pink Line through areas with likely low gay populations (East Mesa, Gilbert, and most of Chandler). Routing the Pink Line through areas with high gay populations would promote the stereotype that all gay men like the color pink, which is false and totally insulting to both gay and straight men.

Also, I named the original route (plus extensions) the Red Line since many transit agencies often tend to name their first color-coded route as such, followed by the Blue Line as their second route (which would be the proposed I-10 West route).

The Tempe Streetcar I named the Green Line, because it seems that Tempe is a greener city than most others (even most of the Tempe-owned Valley Metro buses are painted green on the front and on the CNG tanks).

Also, I did not use Yellow at all; I used the Gold Line like MARTA in Atlanta.

The Silver Line, Orange Line, and Purple Line are completely random.

It has been over 2 months since I posted in this thread, but I also talked about this at the transit forum of AARoads, and as a modification, perhaps the Gold Line can be routed to turn north/south at either Priest or Mill instead of Dobson. This would reduce overlap with the Red and Blue Lines, as too many lines on such a long segment may lead to train bunching.

BTW, I personally think the Pink, Purple, and Brown Lines would be quite popular with mall shoppers. The Pink Line would connect Superstition Springs Center with SanTan Village and Chandler Fashion Center, the Purple Line would connect Superstition Springs Center with Arizona Mills, and the Brown Line would connect Chandler Fashion Center with Scottsdale Fashion Square. The Orange Line would also connect Chandler Fashion Center with Arrowhead Towne Center, although it is quite a long way.

Sorry, but it would take a very long time to draw all of the exact routes, and such a map would be huge in size. I gave a text explanation of each route in my OP, with some modifications for the Blue, Orange, and Gold Lines in my later posts. Also, the Silver Line had an error in my OP; instead of Peoria Avenue and 56th Street, it should be Shea Blvd and Tatum.

You can look at a map of the Phoenix metropolitan area and follow each line based on the directions given in text.

Looks like somebody from AARoads has decided to help me out and draw a map of my light rail and streetcar system. Note that there is a slight error with the Pink Line, as my idea doesn't include the north-south stretch on 48th Street as indicated on the maps provided. Also, the Green Line (Tempe Streetcar) is missing the segment to the Tempe Public Library. In addition, the Blue Line is also supposed to overlap with the Red Line from Downtown Phoenix to Downtown Mesa, although the map appears to only show the Red and Gold Lines.

this color issue...absolutely the stupidest thing i've ever heard. the chinese...excuse me, asian, people didn't want a line to be called yellow??? screw them. first of all, i have no doubt at all that the overwheming majority of asians didn't give a shyte about it. maybe a few got some laughs about pissing off the round eyes but i'm sure most didn't care one way or another. besides, when demographic changes occur and aneighborhood changes "color", the offense, so to speak is not applicable. i would have told them "really? okay, fine...let's call it the nada line then, 'cos that's what wwe're gonna build now in your neighborhood." what a bunch of idiots.

Remember, the Phoenix area isn't as dense as NYC or Chicago, so the lines are more spread out than the NYC Subway or the Chicago L.

If I recall, the only thing that Asians found offensive about the “Yellow” line in that case, was that it went through a predominantly Asian neighborhood. I’m sure if it went anywhere else, they couldn’t care less. There is a Yellow Line in Chicago which is the Skokie Swift and here in NY, the N and R Lines which use yellow signage pass through the now predominantly Asian Sunset Pk neighborhood in Bkln and I haven’t heard any of the locals complain.

Transportation policy must line up with Land Use policy. Upzone the corridors along those lines. Do Mixed Use Midrise TOD around the stations. Ridership will depend on whether you can go to work or appointments on it.

Which is why I routed the Brown Line through areas without Hispanic majority populations, and the Pink Line mostly through politically conservative areas with likely low gay populations. Also, the Dobson corridor (although only a small portion of the line) has a bit of an Asian population, which is why I named it the Gold Line instead of Yellow Line.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I was thinking this over, and based on a survey given in 2013 to Queen Creek residents on what transit mode they would prefer, I came up with an idea of a neighborhood circulator that would serve as a complement to the Pink Line.

The circulator route would serve Queen Creek, south Gilbert, and a part of east Mesa. Destinations along the route would include ASU Polytechnic, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Queen Creek Marketplace, the south Gilbert neighborhoods of Seville and Freeman Farms, and SanTan Village. Part of the route would be along Williams Field Road and would make stops at the Pink Line stations there. The circulator route would be known as the Pink Connector.

More recently, one thing that I have been thinking about my light rail system is what yards to base each line. I don't think basing all lines in a single yard (Phoenix) is a good idea. So, I think there should be two rail yards, with the following line assignments:
  • The existing yard in Phoenix would be expanded for more cars. Lines based in Phoenix would include the Red, Blue, Silver, and Gold Lines.
  • Tempe plans on building its own yard for the Tempe Streetcar (Green Line in my system). In my system the Tempe yard would be expanded for light rail. Lines based in Tempe would include the Green, Orange, Pink, Brown, and Purple Lines. While it may make more geographic sense to base the Orange Line in Phoenix, the Orange Line interlines with the Brown Line at Chandler Fashion Center and thus uses the same cars for both lines, thus basing it in Tempe along with the Brown Line would keep a more even distribution of lines between the two yards, otherwise having them based in separate yards would not allow the interlining of those two lines, reducing operational efficiency.

Any changes anyone would make to these yard assignments? Should there be additional yards besides Phoenix and Tempe?

I have shared my dream light rail idea with a friend that has been visiting us, and he liked my idea.

However, one thing that he was a bit skeptical of was interlining some lines at their endpoints. In my dream system, there would be two pairs of lines that would be interlined, the Orange and the Brown Lines at Chandler Fashion Center, and as well as the Pink and Purple Lines at Superstition Springs Center.

My rationale for interlining these lines is to increase operational efficiency and make better use of pay hours for light rail operators. Several Phoenix area bus routes do this already during certain times of the day. However, my friend says that interlining lines would cause potential confusion with riders when they board, thinking that they boarded one line when they actually boarded another.

I think potential mis-boarding could be alleviated if the destination signs are changed prior to arriving at the last stop. Multicolor LED destination signs can be used to help riders know what color line they are boarding, displaying the text in the color of the line.

What does anyone here think about interlining light rail lines?
