That's a very interesting site. Slightly off topic, does anyone know the exact location of the "Broadway-Nassau"...it kinds of looks like Fulton or Dey Street, at Broadway, facing east...and the Brew Burger and Joe's Chinatown have been demolished to make way for the Fulton Transit Center....

Or am I completely mistaken and this is on Nassau Street, LOL?

I believe cutting it to Queens Blvd., rather than the more practical Sutphin, with its attendant inconvenience, was actually intentional as well- get the subway out of the area, to make it "better"...

Well they had to close the el for construction, since about a blocks' worth of old structure had to be physically replaced to match the grade of the new ramp.The actual work took about 18-24 months.

The most vivid memory I have is watching them demolishing the Sutphin Blvd station in the summer of 1978, while my family was waiting for the Q44 bus to the Bronx Zoo. Still remember the chainsaws chopping off the catwalks on the track, and the construction workers taking their lunch breaks sitting on the edge of the 168th St bound platform. It was traumatic because, being 6 I had no understanding of what was going on. I thought they were tearing the whole J train down.

I love pics with movie theaters in them because it makes it really easy to date them. That movie was released in spring 1971, so i'd say April.

IMDB seems to think summer, but then again movies back then would open in one theater chain first, then work its way down the food chain to the others. But yeah, marquees are very handy indeed.

So how's spring treating you down there? Finished off the winter's supply of bambi meat yet? :)

I don't see any reason why the ramp couldn't have been constructed the same way as the one off the Fulton St El. Space restrictions apparently required that the 3 tracks leave the original structure at slightly different grades, but it was done nonetheless!

The tracks rose to clear the LIRR. If they did not replace the section they did, the structure would have had an odd bump in it

That's because the older ones were destined for the scrapper by 1971. I believe that a lot of R1's already met their fates by then.

It was absolutely absurd to recreate a stainless steel look (the rationale for the silver/blue scheme, to make older cars look less old) on cars which dated to the Hoover administration.

but they also thought the new subway would be built QUICKLY..with the extensions up and running by the mid 90's.
1977 had the Archer line at the halfway point after 5 years of work..and WOULD have been finished by 1980 IF several factors didn't occur.

The IND still had old timers into 1976, but none of them got the platinum mist-and-blue treatment. I personally never rode on any prewar car with that scheme. Then again, prior to 2004, the last time I rode on the R-1/9s was in July of 1971 on a CC.

We had a few Kresge's stores in South Bend. There was one at a shopping center right by where we lived. The shopping center is still there and if you know where to look, you can tell where Kresge's used to be.

Correct. Service on the old el ended after the PM rush Friday and the IND was running to Lefferts by around 100PM Sunday.

I think that they perceived that their customers didn't come by train. They thought their customers were local who came by car, by bus, or foot. The el made the area, and their businesses, look dark, dingy, dirty, and dangerous. It was how people in the neighborhood got to Manhattan or to other parts of Queens or to Brooklyn to work or to shop, not how many customers got to them.

Well, they seem to have been wrong. I'm sure a lot of their business came from Brooklynites who didn't own cars, and from Manhattan commuters who stopped off in the area on their way home.

With the subway gone, the Brooklynites w/o cars couldn't easily get there, and the Manhattan commuters may have started to avail themselves of other shopping venues.

I think the premise of your post is right, even if the merchants were fatally wrong. They thought they could transform the area from urban to suburban by keeping away what they perceived as an undesirable element.

Maybe 'cause the others were planned for faster scrapping, whereas it may have been known the cars that went "east" would be around longer?

I've heard (I think on this board) that the only reason they lasted until 1976 elsewhere was because of delivery delays with the R46s...

And if there was any silver lining to all of this, the fiasco in Jamaica was probably the straw that broke the camel's back of el removal fever that took hold in the 1930's. It's noteworthy that there has been no further service eliminations since the closing of the Jamaica el. The MTA's attempt to close the Franklin Ave shuttle was a failure, the first time community pressure actually stymied the city's attempts to abandon a service they did not want to invest in.

the fever should have produced MONEY to build new subways to replace the els.
the 8th ave..Queensboro..Crosstown were needed..but the rest could have been put off until new lines were built where there wasn't any rail service.

Yep. At least in NYC, the Jamaica Fiasco was the end of El removal. I don't think they could ever get away with this again.

The public now understands that transit services enhances, rather than blights an area...
