I think that they perceived that their customers didn't come by train. They thought their customers were local who came by car, by bus, or foot. The el made the area, and their businesses, look dark, dingy, dirty, and dangerous. It was how people in the neighborhood got to Manhattan or to other parts of Queens or to Brooklyn to work or to shop, not how many customers got to them.
