Well, they seem to have been wrong. I'm sure a lot of their business came from Brooklynites who didn't own cars, and from Manhattan commuters who stopped off in the area on their way home.

With the subway gone, the Brooklynites w/o cars couldn't easily get there, and the Manhattan commuters may have started to avail themselves of other shopping venues.

I think the premise of your post is right, even if the merchants were fatally wrong. They thought they could transform the area from urban to suburban by keeping away what they perceived as an undesirable element.
