Those 22s were unique in several ways. They were the first cars (other than the 10 A/C R-17s) to have the salmon colored fiberglass seats that became the standard for several car contracts. The design of the weather stripping around the side doors was similar to all subsequent NYCTA equipment. The Bulkhead door window was a single drop sash similar to the R-10 side windows rather than the split window of the older cars and the doors had a rigidized pattern in the metal. When I saw them, I figured that the R-26s would be like that but unfortunately that wasn't the case and the R-22s were the last TA car contract to have an openable bulkhead door window. |

You probably could, but in the case of that R-40, it just happened to be the train that was on the stand at the time so I took it. A few months later, I was working the QJ and although the line was mostly R-27/30s, the interval behind mine was an R-9 and I couldn't get another M/M to swap with me which was surprising since most of the newbies at that time, except for Big Ed, preferred SMEEs to R-9s. |

The one on 42nd and 3rd was the last one remaining, and actually stayed open until May of 1991 I believe. I actually ate in that one numerous times in the '80s when I was on messenger runs in the area.Horn & Hardart ought to consider a revival of the Automat, at least for Times Square where it likely would be a major tourist attraction. |

If I recall, about 2 or 3 years ago someone did attempt to revive the Automat and opened one somewhere in Manhattan. From what I have heard it didn't work out too well and I believe it has now closed. I guess with the proliferation of Mickey D's, BK, KFC Taco Bell etc, there just isn't a demand for the type of food and service provided by the Automats and their associated cafeterias. In fact when most of the Automats closed, Horn & Hardart actually obtained some Burger King franchises and opened up BKs in many of the old H & H locations. Those too, sadly, are gone. |

No, the death of any fast junk franchise is a good thing IMHO. I do miss H&H, having first met them in Philly. I had many a breakfast at the Reading Terminal location on my way to work several blocks away. Later, in NYC, I used the retail shop on Ave A as well as Automats on 6th Ave, 5th Ave W 72nd and the one by GCT. |

One of the websites dealing with Automat history claims that the one on Fulton St closed around 1970 but I remember it at least until 1972 when I started working in the command center and would eat there when I was working an AM or PM. The Automat was not open all night but right next door to it was a Bickford's diner which was open all nigh and where I ate when working midnights. After the Automat closed, it became a Burger King although I'm not sure of the exact year that change took place but the semi attached H & H retail shop on Pearl St remained open for several years and in the late 1970s when I was working the schedule office, I would often shop there and bring my lunch back to the office to eat. I'm not sure exactly when the BK and the H & H retail store closed since from 1983 to 85 I was out on the road as a trainmaster but When I came back to the schedule office in 1985, I don't recall either of them being there. I didn't exactly pay attention to when it happened but sometime in the late 1970s, the Bickford's next door closed and was taken over as a Wendy's. |

I think the BK is now a Wendy's - and the 99¢ store is now a clothing outlet. Next time I'm that way (I often eat at Blimpie @ Willoughby & Pearl) I will see if the facade has been redone - erasing the "automat" lettering. Google street view seems to show this change.wayne |

When it was fresh, you could definitely see the metallic cast it had. Case in point is the R33 they have in the Train of Many Colours - it still has its "sheen". Even on the R-7a's and R-9s it didn't look bad when fresh. Problem was, it managed to pick up a tremendous amount of track dust and grime, and looked awful in no time. No, the QJ was definitely gone by 1973. I lived in Urbana, IL from June 1971 to June 1974, but came to NYC in the summers and at Christmas (and one year during Easter). Summer of 1972, QJ still operated to Stillwell "normal hours" (Mon-Fri 6 AM-8 PM), all other times to Broad St. M operated to either Broad or Chambers normal hours, other times between Metropolitian and Myrtle-Broadway. KK ran from 168 St or Eastern Pkwy via Chrystie cut to 57/6 rush hours only. By the summer of 1973, when I arrived from Illinois, the QJ had become the J and ran 24/7 to Broad, M ran via the Montague rat hole to Stillwell via Brighton normal hours, and the KK became the K and only ran from Eastern Pkwy rush hours. The K went away in late August 1976 w/o replacement, the same time that the EE was eliminated, IIRC at that same time, the CC was extended rush hours only to Euclid Av or Rockaway Park, the A now ran express in Brooklyn rush hours, and the E terminated at WTC 24/7. Sometime in the 80s, the M was moved to the West End, ran to Bay Parkway rush hours, other times during normal hours to 9 Av, and evenings and weekends to Myrtle-Broadway only. Hope that clears things up :) |

Aside from the KK put-ins and layups ar East NY, Atlantic, etc, these service patterns are reflected on the first post-Chrystie 1967 map and the 1972 & 1974 service maps, all of which I have,Although I was only 4 1/2, looking over how the maps changed, I believe the KK became the K and the QJ the J, and the M extended to Stillwell in 1973. Unfortunately, I have 1972 & 1974 Vignelli mpas, but no 1973 copy, so I base my estimated date of the changeowver on what others on this board have posted. But it was definitely in that general time period. |

The Automat you are referring to was the BAMM Automat on St. Marks Place, near NYU. It was started by three recent NYU grads. Unfortunately, the food was nothing like in the old H&H's. It was mostly bar food meant to appeal the the drinking crowd in the area. There was no seating and it was really a giant vending machine. The operation started out as open 24-hours, but soon switched to an inconsistent schedule. I believe a combination of being under capitalized and a disagreement among the partners led to the operation closing after little more than a year. Right now the NY Library has a great exhibit going on that features the Automat. It's at the branch next to Bryant Park and runs until February. Al Mazzone www.HornAndHardartCoffee.com |

So the minor overhaul basically made the R10s worse then they already were? If that's the case all I have to say is that is sad. I wonder how the R30s did. I know R27s didn't last long wearing the David Gunn red paint scheme (I read either here or on Subtalk or both that the R27s painted red lasted until 1990 unless someone can confirm that). |

The green R10's were the loudest cars I ever rode. During the summer they were literally ear-splitting as they sped through the Cranberry St. tubes. The R10 overhaul didn't include much more than a tuneup, some new rollsigns (in B&W and only including 4 routes) and a new paintjob. These cars really went downhill in their last year when they were used all day long, instead of mostly during rush hour. The R30's ran nicer, much like the R36WF cars. They retained signature SMEE sounds, particularly when the doors closed. Had these cars had A/C they probably would have remained in service another 7-9 years. |

That's their logical replacements. Remember, the R143's replaced nothing. It would have allowed the slants and half the R40M's in ENY to go south to CI and that 90's car crunch may not have been so bad. |

The H & H mac & cheese as I remember it had little bits of tomato in it which I really didn't care for. One of my favorites was the fish cake which did taste good with the tomato sauce on it. There was an Automat on the corner of 33 St and 8 Av where ERA members would go both before and after the ERA meetings when they were held at the RR YNCA in Penn Station. Trolley Museum of NY used to have monthly movie nights at the L (now Bkln) Historical Society on Pierrepont St in Bkln and the Automat on Fulton St in downtown Bkln served the same purpose for the buffs who went to the TMNY movie nights. |

Like I said..the "KK" was NO MORE..There was no more direct service between 57th st 6th avenue and 168th st Jamaica..that the KK provided. The replacement service,"K",operated from several terminals during the morning and evenings.. Metropolitan ave..first 4 trains early AM..lay ups Atlantic avenue..AM LAY UPS..PM LAY UPS.. Eastern Pkway..Main Terminal. So..they were really not the same. |
