That's correct. Many people who are not railroad or transit savvy don't realize that in many cases, the respective agencies find it cheaper to pay overtime to a smaller work force than to hire additional employees since in addition to actual wages, the fringe benefits for any additional employees must also be calculated. |

You can't work OT unless your supervisor OK's it.I used to be a supervisor for a NYS agency. OT approval had to come from a Deputy Commissioner. If any of your subordinates worked OT you had to send an e-mail to the Deputy Commissioner at the end of the week detailing what was accomplished. Routine work was not an acceptable reason for OT. Someone being out sick for a day or two was not an acceptable reason for OT. |

This story doesn't depict what railroaders go through on a daily basis depending on your craft. Their sitting there criticizing these workers for money that was earned legally and as mentioned negotiated in a contract agreement. If their stealing time that's one thing,if their caught sleeping alot that's another however since that doesn't sound like the case I'm assuming these guys are working hard for their money. I've been in the railroad industry for 8 years now and I haven't seen one easy job unless you sit behind a desk. I was a trackworker and a freight conductor and I earned every penny I made even on the days when there wasn't much work. People demand quality service but don't know the sweat,hard work,blood,tears,muscle,and not to mention the co-workers you use along the way and other situations we deal with to help keep things moving but I never hear stories on the good job that we do. However when a story like this come out people are out raged yeah right these guys deserve every penny and then some. |

You are correct. It is a totally biased story. As Randyo mentioned they don't mention that it is cheaper to do the work on overtime than to hire additional employees.It is one thing to put workers on overtime because or archaic work rules and workers just sit there doing nothing and another where there is necessary work that needs to be accomplished. Changing th rules so that your pension is not determined on your last three years is a legitimate issue, but bringing up the fare is irrelevant to this story. This article is more of an editorial than it is a hard news story. As you rightly point out, they need to tell both sides of the story. The worker giving a no comment answer does not help his case. He coes across like a criminal which is exactly what the Post wanted. |

Lets look at Mr. Blackburn for a second. $135,684.53 in OT in a year in a job with a normal pay amount that's less than half that. What the hell did this guy do, spend every waking moment on the shop floor? if he gets, lets say $50 an hour in overtime, that works out to the eqivilent of 113 days of work, without stoping. going 24/7 for close to 4 months. the reason people comaplin is they don't see that as making any sense to them. It doesn't matter if it's legal or not, it just doesn't compute. Same as a few years ago when there was an uproar over TA track workers getting paid to do nothing cause thier duty shifts overlapped the rush hours. basicly the mindset of most people is "inactivity= no pay check". |

The worst are the mid level executives who view their job as passing work down from above and forwarding the results back up to the top without even reviewing or understanding what they are forwarding. All they do is nag their employees if deadlines are missed, but never give any guidance in how to complete the task. Worse yet when the employee does a good job, they get all the credit and the subsequent promotion. If the employee fails, the employee is held accountable, not the manager. |

It's a lot, but in all honestly, it's a bleep load of work. How many people can really show up for that amount of time. Anyone who goes that long, more power to them. But I'm a hateful rw-er. |

The base $66,000 is $33/hour x 40 hours/week x ~50 weeks. The additional $136,000 is $33/hour x doubletime x 40 additional hours/week x ~50 weeks.The article suggested that the extra time was for rules not for staffing that the RR needed for getting the work done. My calculation suggests that the pay was for satisfying the rule in the records, not for being in the shop, because I’ve worked adjacent double shifts and know you don’t keep that up for 5 days a week 50 weeks a year.
