You can't work OT unless your supervisor OK's it.

I used to be a supervisor for a NYS agency. OT approval had to come from a Deputy Commissioner. If any of your subordinates worked OT you had to send an e-mail to the Deputy Commissioner at the end of the week detailing what was accomplished.

Routine work was not an acceptable reason for OT. Someone being out sick for a day or two was not an acceptable reason for OT.
