You think like a railfan and I think like a dispatcher because I'm running an efficent railroad, rather than entertaining some rail fans. As I said already, I'd rather keep my c/r's safely locked in a cab if I can do so.If I was the dispatcher and I had 24 cars worth of R46's available, that's what I would use. First of all, he is starting with 3/4 car R46 trains on Friday night. Add 2/4's together, and he has one train right off the bat. He lays up the other 4 car piece to the yard, which comes back out Monday morning, and all he has to bring out of the yard is 2/8 car R46's if he has them for the weekend. Why would I bring out one or 2 R32's if I had an R46 avilable? Why would I give my workers a task of changing 40 or 60 side signs and 10 end signs on an R32 only to have them get changed back to A for Monday morning service? I will not give my workers un-necessary work to do. |

So as to not get assaulted in between stations.Memories are short. A number of years a go c/r Stuart Abranowicz (may have spelling wrong) was operating an R40 slant B train around 103 St. A female customer who was being assaulted ran to him for cover. She got saved, the c/r got shot, paralyzed (sp.?) and died after a few months. If he was in a locked transverse cab, rather than in full view outside the cab in between stations, he would be alive today. We do not want to lose any more c/r's like that. Freak occurance? Yes. But company policy is when an incident happens, steps are taken to prevent it from happening again: all replacement equipment with transverse cabs. If you are refering to something else: let's not rehash past discussions. NYCT has no plans to expand OPTO to long trains. The issues involved have been discussed in the past. |

The B doesn't make sense, because it requires 10 car trains. The M makes perfect sense since it would still have 40 R160s for late night shuttles and such. To me, a permanent swap of the C and M fleets could stop this seasonal flip-flop, but there may be valid reasons to not having R32s maintained in ENY. |

That is one long, ranting sentence with no periods at all, not even one on the end. Doesn't make sense. So what there were 2 R46's laid up in the yard? Maybe they came in from Pitkin after those 32's were already on the road. Maybe they were waiting to go to Pitkin Yd waiting for a man to take them in, or laid up from Far Rock. IDK what time this was and don't care! The railroad is a 24/7 entity, not only when you are out there railfanning! Take the test and c'mon down! Take the promotion to dispatcher and run your railroad the way YOU want, and I'll run mine the way I want! And it's two cents, not two senses! |

I know the answers aren't easy here, but I'm not sure the cab was the problem. Sounds as though the guy had a gun-- he probably could have shot the latch and forced the door if he really wanted to. Or he could shoot the conductor through the open window in the station. In any case, while I miss the railfan window, I rarely ride the subways to railfan; I usually just need to get from one place to another, and railfanning is incidental. If transverse cabs make things better somehow, okay. |
