guys,guys,guys.there was no cover up.its so simple,it was just forgotten about over the years,period.FYI: euclid tower is the only tower in the system that shows the tunnels were supposed to continue.there is nothing on the model boards at 179st,205st,roosevelt ave. that show provisions for tunnels,can anyone explain,with proof,why?
the only other tower that showed a conn.into a much contested conn.was the original 1904 lirr tower at flatbush ave & atlantic.it showed both the e/b & w/b track conn. into the irt.utc,your last 2 lines are a direct quote from brennan`s fantastic april fools joke.

I believe that at least a shell was built, abandoned, then quite likely filled-in and left to lore. That was the history and fate of the mystery tunnel segment in 108th St between 71st & Jewel Avenues. Why it was built in the first place is unknown, and the only known record of it was a barely-legible 1942 inspection report that tantalized far more than it satisfied.

From info that I have, the finished concrete wall was only installed at the time Grant Ave station was completed and prior to that there was a "temporary" wooden barricade across all 4 tracks.

I didn't know 76th Street had side platforms! You'd think the Board of Transportation would have learned from the IRT's and BMT's mistakes in building side platforms.

76th Street Station exists as an idea shared by every sentient being that reads this message board. God exists as an idea shared by millions of people. Whether God actually exists is beside the point and so it is with 76th Street. (Actually, my Hagstrom map from the period shows a station at 75th Street, which is also beside the point.)

Well, not completely. You could excavate 76th Street and Pitkin Avenue and establish whether the station exists. God is not so easy...

I'm weilling to believe, though I have no way to be certain, that some rudimentary construction behind the "wall" was done- otherwise, there'd be no reason add a wall later. But if the station ever came close to completion or actually had train service, there would be many reocrds of this, from constuction contracts to dispatch logs (or something like that). There would also be real photos...and there would be remants visible topside to this day. Not only would it be impossible to build the station in secret, it would be impossible to completely obliterate in secret as well.

In consideration of the above, I reach the conclusion that it never even came close to completion, and certainly never had any train service.

In case you haven't been made aware from reading the postings, 76 St was NEVER intended to be any sort of a terminal but rather a local stop along a Pitkin Av subway that was intended to proceed farther out in Queens and also be connected to the LIRR ROW via a portal from UNDER the ROW rather than a ramp from above as is the case with the present Liberty Jct. Had the subway been built farther along Pitkin, there would have been another express station near Woodhaven Blvd east of which there would have been a junction point between the line to Rockaway and the line continuing out Pitkin.

The wall at the present end of track is concrete. The cinder block walls were erected only at the ends of the subway infrastructure for A7 and A8 yard leads. I suspect that the ciderblock walls on the yard leads were erected to prevent the land fill that appeared to be there earlier from finding its way back into the tunnels for the adjacent A56 and A6 leads.

Although I neglected to check when I was the Zone Trainmaster there, I'm sure that there is a similar track display for 76 St under some tape on the Pitkin Yd model board as well.

When I was there with George Abere in 1962, the cinderblock walls were not there, but as I have mentioned in many posts on the subject, there was loose black earth from the floor to the roof of the tunnels a short distance beyond where the cinder block walls presently are. It seems to indicate the possibility of some backfilling having been done at some point, but how deep the black earth goes is anybody's guess. In any event even if the ciderblock walls were to be removed, anyone wanting to g farther back had better bring a crew with a lot of shovels.

THat it never had any train service is a fact that needs no corroboration although apparently some track did come close enough to it that it was able to be seen by local yard M/M and station switchmen working in the area. It is known that A7 and A* yard leads were connected the A5 and A6 leads just inside the Pitkin Yd portal and that some yard moves were made onto those tracks prior to the removal of the switches When I was there the first time in 1962, there was rail on both A7 and A8 for about 2 car lengths although the switches had been removed. There were no bumping blocks at the ends of the tracks which seemed to indicate that the tracks had at some time in the past gone farther back than the 2 car lengths that were exposed at the time I was there.

a few corrections,it always was the intention of the city to ramp up at grant & take over the fulton st.from that point.also its cross bay blvd,not wood haven blvd at that point.woodhaven ends at liberty ave.

Thanks for the correct. I forgot about Cross Bay. As for the connection to the Fulton El, I know that it was always part of the plan, but a subway continuing out Pitkin was also part of the plan as well although I suspect it wouldn't have been as important to continue it further with the Liberty Av el being only a few blocks away.

It would say "to 76st" as I have seen it so many times before it was covered so as not to confuse the tower operators.this was told me by a supervisior in the tower many years ago.

The two tracks go off at an angle, then stop, with an arrow pointing "TO 76 ST". The Pitkin Yard board doesn't show how the leads connect to the main line.

It has to show something since the switches that separate A7 and A8 from A5 and A6 were controlled by Pitkin Yd tower when they were in place and it is known that there were moves from the yard into those tracks when the switches were in.

Well, if it's you telling me that you were there, I have no reason to doubt it. So I guess there was a little bit more than "rudimentary" construction...(i.e, relocation of utilities, curbs, etc), but nothing that could have come close to supporting passenger service.

I'm not saying that I was in the station per se, but there are a lot of loose ends involving construction in the area that leave a lot of unanswered questions. Since it is known that Pitkin Yd did make drill moves into A7 and A8 at one time, I would have to infer that those tunnels and tracks must have extended much farther than the 2 car lengths that were visible at the times I was there.
